A lot of the plot also seemed to be related to the art business, whereas I was way more interested in Antarctica. I could appreciate the build of suspense and the way all the characters and their activities made for potential suspects, but I latched onto the correct villain nearly from the start and picked up on the motive as soon as I was given enough facts to piece it together. Although it didn’t measure up to the atmospheric and tense plot of Breathless, it was still a compelling, and chilling, locked-room thriller. But when her boyfriend misses the ship and suspicious things start to happen to people on board, it seems like the water might be the least of Olivia's worries .

I found the whole book a little too slow for me to completely get into the story, but there were parts which were interesting. She didn’t even try to find out if someone she suspected could be telling her the truth even when they offered her a way to verify. I was underwhelmed by McCulloch's debut thriller, Breathless, but I can't resist thrillers with icy settings - especially when that setting is Antarctica - and I also love a good cruise ship novel, so I had to read Midnight. There were certainly enough moments that could have been incredibly scary but instead stayed in the lite-thriller genre. Midnight is an adult thriller that follows main character Olivia who gets the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to Antartica on behalf of her art investor boyfriend. I appreciated how this was another situation where a group is isolated and trapped with a murderer while on the fortified icebreaker/cruise ship and on Antarctica, itself. It's a difficult task to keep the readers' attention till the very end, one where enough clues have been scattered around and we are now on the brink of discovering the truth.

I would never, ever, go to Antartica but I feel such a great fascination for books and tv shows set there. When Olivia boards the cruise liner destined for Antarctica, she has no idea the horrors that await her on board. Amy McCulloch is a Chinese-White author, born in the UK, raised in Ottawa, Canada, now based in London, UK. It is a strong mystery with interesting characters (although perhaps not enough detail on the broad range of supporting ones) and a fascinating location for the action to take place. She has written several novels for children and young adults, and been published in over fifteen different languages. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Meh, given how bad breathless the first book was I thought surely you can’t produce another book subpar to it.

The main character has a water phobia and has recently experienced total burnout from all the stresses in her life she was ignoring. This should have been the trip of a lifetime, but things begin to take a dark turn when Olivia’s boyfriend, Aaron, fails to make it to the cruise ship in time before it departs. You don't get enough sense of the vastness and isolation and snowiness of the setting, though a curious penguin does make an appearance.

Well, he never makes it to the ship, and they set sell with Olivia having to take the lead on the event.

Suddenly Olivia thinks she sees the strange man from the night before who was arguing with Aaron, he seems to be a staff member onboard the ship, but she feels uneasy about him. I also guessed the twist at the end easily - not a huge problem for me as a reader, but a bit disappointing.

So, a slight notch down from Breathless, but definitely worth reading for those who like their thrillers in remote locations. Amy McCulloch definitely made me feel as though I was there on the cruise ship, especially through her descriptions, when she is describing how the ship has recently been refurbished, and she brilliantly makes you feel the danger closing in. McCulloch] has an eye for edgy and unusual settings, and the new novel is easily as good as her first. As they set off on the cruise, people begin to die, and Olivia begins to wonder whether she might be next.
