I am looking for some bone ([plastic) stiffening for some Gaiters. It is like what is used in Corsetts. I need it to be white or clear or a light colour and to be 5 mm by 3 mm. Rigilene boning is a strong plastic kind that's known for being supportive and lasting a long time. It looks ribbed, which makes it stiff and hard to bend. Flat steel boning is the most rigid and supportive type of boning available for dresses. It is made from flat strips of steel, usually coated with a layer of nylon for added comfort. Flat steel boning provides excellent support and shaping, making it suitable for structured and fitted dresses, such as ball gowns or bridal wear. However, due to its rigidity, it may restrict movement and may not be suitable for dresses that require a greater range of motion. Sometimes the casings are sewn to the outside as a design feature, as seen in corsets or foundation garments.

This application of side boning differs from the underwire casing application in that it is not stretched as it is applied and neither end is concealed under the elastics of the bra. The omission of concealment allows the boning to span a greater distance and provides for a smooth and balanced appearance at the underarm. There are several key areas where boning can be placed to provide the most support in a dress. These include the bodice, the waist, and the hips. The primary purpose of using boning in dresses is to maintain the desired silhouette of the garment. It helps to create a clean, smooth line and prevents the fabric from wrinkling or collapsing. Boning can be especially useful in dresses with fitted bodices, strapless or off-the-shoulder styles, corsets, and ball gowns.

In corsetry, a bone is one of the rigid parts of a corset that forms its frame and gives it rigidity. The purpose of the boning in a corset varies slightly from era to era. Generally, the cinching/shaping properties of corsetry puts strain onto the fabric from which the corset is made. The boning supports the desired shape and prevents wrinkling of the corset fabric. Bones, and the substances used for the purpose, are generically called "boning"; however, the name likely arises from the use of whalebone in early corsets. This whalebone was cool because it was both bendy and strong. People who made corsets used heat and water to shape them so that they could fit nicely on the body. But as time passed, it became hard to find and cost a lot of money. The question is actually very subjective and ultimately boils down to personal preference more than anything else. You are the maker, so you need to decide which one you want to use and for what function. Is there a substitute for boning? People had to think of new ideas when the cool whalebone became scarce. One of these ideas was "featherbone." Instead of using whale parts, they used stiff feathers. Featherbone was not as common in corsets but used in other clothes like dresses and belts. It was stretchy and strong, like a little helper behind the scenes. It is made from a plastic material, usually polyester or nylon, and is often used in garments that require gentle shaping and minimal support. Featherweight boning is ideal for lightweight dresses, such as summer sundresses or lingerie-inspired designs. It provides a subtle structure without adding bulk or stiffness to the garment. Boning refers to the stiff supports used in garments to provide structure and shaping. In the case of dresses, boning is commonly used in the bodice to create a fitted and defined silhouette. There are several types of boning available for use in dresses, each with its own unique characteristics and benefits. This article will explore the different types of boning and their suitability for different dress styles.Knitting Lingerie Style: More Than 30 Basic and Lingerie – Inspired Designs PDF by Joan McGowen-Michael Boning in a dress is a great way to provide added support and structure to the garment. In this article, we will discuss where boning should be placed in a dress to provide the most support. Before we delve into the specific placement of boning, it's important to understand what boning is, and how it works. Boning refers to the strips of rigid material, such as steel or plastic, that are inserted into a garment's seams to provide structure and support. The boning serves as a framework that keeps the dress in shape, preventing sagging and maintaining the desired silhouette.
