The Murdering Sort" by Karen M. McNanus (1 star)-The story itself was okay, but what kept throwing me is the main character we follow, is a great great niece of Miss Marple and that her granddad is Miss Marple's, nephew, Raymond. The math wasn't mathing people. It just kept messing me up. Also this takes place in the 1970s and I just gave up how this was even making sense after a while. Because of the age discrepancy, I just couldn't get into the story. Also the reason behind the murder was stupid. The 12th story is The Disappearance by Leigh Bardugo, narrated by Miriam Margolyes. I loved the descriptions of the people and the surprise ending. I felt quite bereft when I finished listening and had to leave Miss Marple behind. Favorite quotes:
No idea when any of the stories begin and end - have to stab around 30 odd chapters hoping not to hear the ending first. Would titles of the stories be too much too ask?! Only three stories in this collection were worth reading. The ones that were fine enough to read were written by Jean Kwok, Val McDermid, and Karen M. McManus. The other nine didn’t even have a well written or good enough mystery that made reading the story worth my time. The new collection of Miss Marple stories will be released simultaneously in the US and UK on September 13, 2022. That date coincides with the first day of “Agatha Christie Week”– the days she's honoured each year in celebration of her September 15th birthday.
Interestingly, this new Miss Marple collection is far from the first set of works to be authorised on an author's behalf after their death. Foyle's War creator Anthony Horowitz has penned new works authorised by the estates for Ian Fleming and Arthur Conan Doyle. Sophie Hannah has written new Hercule Poirot mysteries. It appeared that the concept of never speaking ill of the dead fell into abeyance when the dead were of the servant class. Why Miss Marple, thank you so much for returning to us with some delightful new tales! Of course, I'd love to sit down with a cup of tea and scone and listen to them with you. (This collection was an absolute delight.) Marple is the best loved [detective]. Also the most influential. . . . It is Miss Marple who introduced the revolutionary notion that people are essentially the same wherever one goes.” — Los Angeles Times There have been many adaptations of the Agatha Christie stories, on both the big screen and the small, but if you want to see how Ms. Christie envisioned her beloved character, tune into the BBC television series, “Miss Marple”.A brave attempt to write Miss Marple stories to a similar level of ability but this is a very good effort. I would enjoy reading a similar book featuring one of Agatha Christie’s other characters Hercule Poirot. It feels very exciting to allow this formidable selection of authors the opportunity to come up with new adventures and mysteries for Miss Marple. It is time for readers to rediscover Marple and I personally cannot wait to read the resulting stories. When & Where Can You Get Marple: Twelve New Mysteries Although the amateur sleuth of more mature years is now a common feature of crime fiction, Miss Marple was a marked departure from the popular image of a detective when first introduced. As an elderly unmarried female of moderate means, she was regularly overlooked and underestimated, allowing her to pass unnoticed and use her remarkable powers of observation and inference to ferret out the guilty party whenever a crime occurred in her vicinity. In addition, she had an unrivalled understanding of human nature, which she developed through spending nearly her whole life in the same small village.
Since its publication in the United Kingdom, it has been issued in the USA, Germany, Israel, Holland, Poland and France and is due to be published in Italy, Hungary and Croatia. The collection started strongly with a mystery that references many Christie stories. It also felt very inkeeping with the classic style of the original novels.
This collection of a dozen original short stories, all featuring Jane Marple, will introduce the character to a whole new generation. Each author reimagines Agatha Christie’s Marple through their o The first story had the supremely clichéd line “Miss Marple let out the breath she had not realised she had been holding” and it was pretty much all downhill from there. In Elly Griffiths’ Murder at the Villa Rosa, Miss Marple’s final trip abroad in Marple sees her enjoying a holiday on the Amalfi Coast, once again courtesy of Raymond West. In a hotel setup reminiscent of that seen in several Christie novels, she finds herself rubbing shoulders with an eclectic bunch of fellow guests, including a blowhard colonel, a glamourous American, a mysterious Italian couple and a writer who might just have murder in mind.
