Description

Alumna Dr Giuliana Di Martino (PhD Physics 2014) is a renowned expert in low-power, sustainable electronic devices. Her love for engineering began at childhood, spending countless hours building things and pulling them apart to see how they worked – not to mention the curiosity she developed through watching her father, who was a mechanical and electrical engineer. The book is authored by Dr Shini Somara, award-winning mechanical engineer and fluid dynamicist turned TV producer and presenter, children’s book author, podcaster, TEDx Speaker and mentor to MEng and PhD students at Imperial. Although there were a few diagrams that I puzzled over, I felt that the book generally did a good job of explaining complex ideas in a way that is accessible to non-expert readers.

He was probably the main reason why I chose to follow a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) career myself. Others we meet that drive home the variety of careers enabled via engineering include: an agricultural engineer who devises ways of keeping fruit and vegetables fresh after harvest, someone who makes packaging from seaweed to reduce plastic waste, engineers who work on prosthetics and, my personal favourite, an engineer in the theme park industry who loves “experiencing the rides I have worked on, with family and friends”. Created in collaboration with Imperial College London, Engineers Making a Difference explores all the different types of engineering and the qualifications required to study and achieve highly. Over the past ten years or so, I have spent a lot of my time telling others about the excitement of engineering and the vast variety of careers it opens up. The book is intended to show young people that engineering is an industry for everyone, profiling engineers from a range of backgrounds, disciplines and industries.Shini has also spoken at the UN in 2017 for International Women and Girls in Science Day; is a TEDx Speaker and mentor to Masters and PhD students at Imperial College in London.

Each profile will focus on how the individual got into engineering, and what really inspires them about both their career and their day-to-day work.

This book is clearly a passion project for Shini Somara and I can imagine it helping lots of children to make the transition from having a vague desire to work in engineering to having a much more specific understanding of what engineers do and where they see their future selves. Testament to my recommendation, after reading this book, I got four more copies to give to our Women’s Engineering Society summer work experience scheme students! Having time to read this book and discover more about the engineers featured is sure to inspire young people and show them that a career in Engineering is within reach. Lord Sainsbury said: “A vitally important decision which everyone has to take when they are young is what career they want to pursue. Here you can meet some of our engineers, get a glimpse into their everyday lives and learn how they’re making a difference through their work. Your comment may be published, displaying your name as you provide it, unless you request otherwise. The book and its supporting resources are designed to introduce readers aged 12–15 to the opportunities a career in engineering could bring them.Dr Shini Somara is passionate about making science and technology accessible to all, through a variety of media platforms. An AMRC engineer features in a new book that will be sent to every secondary school in the UK to inspire and excite young people about careers in engineering. The book’s profiles include individuals such as space physicist Professor Michele Dougherty from Imperial, co-founder and co-CEO of the sustainable packaging startup Notpla, Pierre Paslier, a technician working at CERN, Jamie Pinnel, and rollercoaster designer, Michelle Hicks.
