Description

The LGBTQIA+ story is so well written and fleshed out that it feels like a natural progression of history. So many books feel compelled in adding elements that deliberately try to diversify the book. Not at all here. Nineteen-year-old Remy knows she is the last red witch alive, and she is determined to stay that way. But the Northern Court King who slaughtered her family has other plans and intends to hunt her kind until none remain.

In senso letterale. Quanto scema devi essere? arguably the most well-written of the three books in the series so far, ak mulford’s descriptions of things made me YEARN.

See a Problem?

The main character often finds herself in situations where survival is unlikely, but she makes it out alive every time... Even when she says that her power is really low at that moment and that she feels weak. Upon meeting the male protagonist and his posse, Remy ends up going through the mandatory physical training of every YA fantasy. Daggers, swords, bows, whatever-you-can-name, and that was disappointing to me. I thought the book was about witches and magic, not sword-fighting faes.

Thank you to A.K. Mulford, Harper Voyager, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. The spicy scenes are creative and different than the usual fantasy ones. (I mean, A TREE?! This book right here! Look Bri was already a favorite character from the previous books and her getting time to shine is what I was looking for. You get her as you know her from before, but also get the chance to see her finally feel like she can lower her guards along the way. I think AK does a great job capturing the dual nature of warriors in this character. The High Mountain Court by A. K. Mulford was the perfect fantasy to escape into this week! Before I get lost in my fangirling, I will say that I’d probably recommend only ages 18+ read this NA fantasy, but it’s so worth a read. I’m actually a little embarrassed to admit that The High Mountain Court has been sitting in my TBR fort for months, but we all know there’s more where that came from…Lines like, "He was the most stunning male Remy had ever seen." Moments such as when Remy almost dies but remains alive through her connection to Hale. The big terrible king being a one-dimensional villain who dies at the hands of Remy's sour-faced sister. The brother who had one scene dying to save his family. Heather sacrificing her life to save Remy... It really felt like an ACOTAR rip-off. Remember the Feysand dynamic? Hybern's death at the hands of Elain? Feyre's meaningless father dying for drama points? Nesta giving up her magic to save Feyre?

Never let anyone else tell you who you are, Remy, even me. No one decides how bright you shine but you.” Full of romance, intrigue, magic, and passion, the first book of The Five Crowns of Okrith—the thrilling TikTok sensation from A.K. Mulford— The High Mountain Court begins the journey of the fugitive red witch Remy as she fights to reclaim her kingdom and discover whats inside her heart.

I would like to thank A.K. Mulford for sharing an ARC with me. Below, the breakdown of the rating I gave The High Mountain Court. Although I look forward to more insight into other characters in the next book, and the continuation of seeing familiar ones, I do have 2 bits of contention. Buri is asked for help by her friend and lover, Delta. Delta is badly injured when Buri arrives and she needs her help to protect the new heiress of the West, Princess Avalina. It was quite refreshing that the characters were quite diverse as well as inclusive. One of the side characters doesn’t identify as male or female (gender fluid??) which made it interesting to see how Remy would interact with them as it was a completely new concept for her. The secondary characters were brilliant and added depth and richness to the overall story. Although I will say, don’t get too attached cause not all of them make it to the last chapter (Ali, I’m low-key feeling betrayed here…I trusted you!). I was immediately immersed into the book and it started out with a good pacing but I felt like the pacing felt off later on. I felt that the structure of the writing was a bit unbalanced and that's what I struggled with while reading.

We got two strong women, a lesbian couple a non-binary character, an interracial couple, and essentially just lots of diversity all throughout. I loved it. My first issue with this book is the POV. We see everything through Remy's eyes. I'm not a big fan of this type of storytelling, especially for books marketed towards a more mature audience. It truly narrows the interpretation a reader can come up with for key elements of the story. Anyway, Remy, as a character, was promising at the beginning. She seems far from naïve and works at a tavern while hiding her witch powers. She recognizes faes and potential threats, takes a lot of initiative when she must save herself and those around her. I thought I would like her.

No." Lina's voice grew distant..."But neither are you my ally. You are something entirely your own, Briata Catullus. I just wish I knew what."
