Yuriko has to deal with a lot of ‘you could land a man if you tried harder’ or ‘you haven’t met the right person yet’ that simply ignores her preferences in favour of trying to force her into a specific box. His stance with a clenched fist and the action lines, demonstrates his determination to be the best husband he can for Yuriko (his wife). Changing my name in our legal system hasn’t gotten rid of that: my body is a tapestry of thirty years of forcing myself to never question my lifelong detachment from femininity, to try to be a better daughter when I wanted to be something closer to a son while never being male, to try to hide my struggles with seeing too much, experiencing too much, being forced to be too much. It is a queer story at base: two socially “aberrant” people forcing themselves to, on the surface, comply with the cultural expectation that people with eventually pair off into perfectly heterosexual, productively pleasant couples of cis man and equally cis woman.

But a chance second encounter on the street revealed that as an asexual woman and gay man, they might have much more in common than they initially assumed. The first is when Gakurouta (Gaku for short, the husband) appears with the husband-help book 800 Steps to be the Perfect Husband. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Gakuroura’s story doesn’t land quite as strongly just because he’s certainly not the first nor last gay guy in manga by this point, whereas Yuriko represents a very underserved demographic, even if he also feels the weight of heteronormative society on him.Any love story aficionado will say that the key to a successful couple is intense desire for one anothe — but what if the characters in question are an asexual woman with a passion for Boys Love stories and a gay man whose heart forever belongs to his oblivious childhood friend? As they try to force a smile for the wedding photographer (both are painfully shy) we wonder what’s led up to this moment. The bestselling LGBTQ+ graphic novel about life, love, and everything that happens in between: this is the fifth volume of the Heartstopper series.

Meanwhile, Gakurouta harbors unrequited feelings for his heterosexual childhood friend Sousuke Kusama, who also happens to be the gardener for their estate. I am so happy that there seems to be more aroace characters being created, and the sexuality is beginning to be understood! It is a celebration of self and is intended to provide a ‘hyper-femme space’ away from the imposition of the male gaze. This seems to be Honami Shirono’s second published manga series and her graphic style is attractive and easy to follow within the individual chapters. And initially, I really was going to remain Meru Clewis: I thought I could weather the mildly unpleasant sting of seeing my birth name everywhere because it would mean I’d have a consistent history of my writing, an easy way to track every piece of work I’ve ever done—and every credit I’ve received—rather than attaching a new name to years of work.

Non sono molto fan poi dei matrimoni a convenienza usati in epoca moderna; comprendo le pressioni familiari e sociali, specie per una donna, ma date le premesse assurde e il tipo di personaggi protagonisti, non ne è venuta fuori una bella storia. Moving from that starting point, this volume suggests that the series will be one filled with love and care. I just wanted the miracle of fitting in: I wanted, much like Yuriko in I Want to Be a Wall, to feel like I was doing the thing that would make everyone happy. That said, I’m not entirely convinced at the strict heterosexuality of the other guy, given his incredibly rapid cycling of his girlfriends and some rather suggestive prose that crops up. While Yuriko is grappling with embracing that she isn’t broken because she is asexual, Gakurouta is trying his best to hold back his romantic feelings for his straight childhood friend, crying as he holds it all in.There is something of a break in my birth name and the name I chose: Mercedez Clewis is a name attached to trauma, to a lot of grief and pain and PTSD that I’m still untangling. It became a daydream, a constant companion as I edited book after book, white noise that drowned out any semblance of happiness. I'd seen aroace representation in manga before and I'm so glad that more aro-ace characters are being created, and that sexuality is finally being understood.
