Harding, Daryl (26 March 2021). "Anno and Higuchi's Shin Ultraman Film Postponed Due to COVID-19". Crunchyroll. Schilling, Mark (1 August 2019). " 'Shin Ultraman' in the Works Through Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi". Variety. Anno’s challenge in reimagining the Ultraman mythology is that the long-running franchise has already spawned myriad sequels, reboots, and spinoffs. The original series ran from 1966-1967, and was immediately followed by seven more series during the Showa era alone—and there have been nearly two dozen variant series since that time, plus dozens of one-off specials and movies. That’s not even counting ancillary media like manga. When reimagining Ultraman, the question is, which one? Yet at its core, Ultraman has always been a superhero kaiju show, pitting giant alien mecha against a never-ending stream of giant monster opponents. Everything else is just window dressing. While there have been a few animated spinoffs, at its heart, Ultraman has always been pure tokusatsu (the umbrella term that describes traditional Japanese visual effects, including suitmation). Yet under the aegis of Shinji Higuchi, that’s the area where Shin Ultraman ended up reimagining things the most radically.

Kenjiro Tsuda was announced as part of the cast on April 25, 2022, providing the voice of the extraterrestrial Zarab. The titles and any onscreen text aren’t translated, and there are also some coding issues that may or may not affect all players. When the aliens speak, their dialogue is supposed to be italicized, but that didn’t work when viewed on an Oppo UDP-205—instead, it displayed HTML tags like and . That proved to be a wee bit distracting. Japan Heroes Universe, a rather interesting concatenation of four former (and maybe in other contexts continuing) competitors in Japan's Kaiju mayhem has abated, the story actually moves into more of a "personal" tale involving Ultraman and his destiny. On August 1, 2019, Tsuburaya Productions announced that an Ultraman film helmed by Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno was in the works, produced in association with Toho and khara and set for a 2021 release. Anno had already completed the first draft of the script on February 5. [21] The film will star Takumi Saitoh, Masami Nagasawa, and Hidetoshi Nishijima. [22] A later report from Japanese news outlet Natalie, which featured comments from Higuchi, Saito, Nagasawa, Nishijima, Tsuburaya chairman Takayuki Tsukagoshi, and Toho president Minami Ichikawa, revealed Saito's role as Ultraman's human host, with Nagasawa playing his partner. [23] In his statement, Higuchi remarked that "A baton has been entrusted to me that has been shining ever since I was a small child. I will solemnly strive to fulfill my responsibility to pass on that heavy, radiant baton created by my seniors." [23] [24] On September 25, ten additional cast members were revealed, including names such as Daiki Arioka, Akari Hayami, and Tetsushi Tanaka. [25]

A casting call for the film was posted on August 20, 2019, with filming set to begin sometime in the fall. Shin Ultraman actually spends as much time with the ragtag group of people known as the SSP Kaiju Defense Force as it does with our title The film debuted in Japan on May 13 in 2022 and ranked at #1 in its first weekend. Tsuburaya Productions, which co-produced the film, describes the story: The continued appearance of giant unidentified life forms known as “S-Class Species (Kaiju)” has become commonplace in Japan.
