We can’t get over how gorgeous this little 3-D elephant model from The Pepa Workshop is! The clothespins double up as the elephant’s legs as well as the rider, who is incredibly detailed – just look at his turban! 2. Newspaper Elephant Craft

Your fingers are the legs (or trunk) of these simple paper puppets. You can make the entire cast of a nursery rhyme or fairy tale in just a few minutes, and then put on your own show. The first two sets of characters were the Alice in Wonderland range and the Cinderella range of characters. They were designed mainly by Gill Leeper. He was a master wood carver and design artist. His work is very distinctive and is easily recognised by the caricatured, exaggerated and pronounced features such as the Ugly sisters and the Mad Hatter. ( It was rumoured that some of his designs were caricatures of some of the people who worked within the factory!) Directed by Sarah Tipple, the show has the sort of fuzzy, uplifting message that will appeal as Christmas looms. “There’s a lot of playfulness in the story, but also a lot of humanity,” says Nancy Harris, who has written the show over the past six years with composer Marc Teitler. The mystical world of Baltese has plenty of stage magic beyond the puppet. Illusion designer John Bulleid, who is also currently working on the West End production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, says the musical involves “one of the most ambitious illusions I’ve ever had to do”.Little one learning the alphabet? These make a great puppet or story-telling prop and it would be fun to make some of the other elephants from the story, both in their usual grey colour and in their decorations from the Elmer’s day parade! Kids could make up their own designs and be as inventive as they can. Reading the sprawling, epic tale, Harris and Teitler decided to go for a grand, operatic score. “You’ve got a whole panorama of a town so it’s asking for something big,” says Harris. Above all, though, the composers have prioritised infectious, peppy tunes. “It’s definitely the kind of musical where you want to sing,” adds Harris. Looking the way he does, Elmer the elephant offers plenty of scope to get creative, as Krokotak does with this milk jug elephant craft. It’s quite a clever idea, and using markers before painting makes the final result look neat. 9. Madhubani Elephant Bookmark When I visit, the cast are rehearsing a witty swing number called “The Count Who Doesn’t Count”, but there are also heartfelt ballads and eerie T he Nightmare Before Christmas-inspired songs. “Individual characters have their language,” Teitler says, explaining that he drew on Kate Bush’s music for the haunting melodies sung by Amy Booth-Steel’s narrator. ‘There’s a lot of playfulness in the story, but also a lot of humanity,’ says the show’s writer Nancy Harris (Photo: Manuel Harlan/RSC) The world’s largest land animal has frequently found its way into English speech. The word ‘jumbo’, meaning large, comes directly from Jumbo the Elephant. Here’s what we mean when we talk about elephants:
