This is the first hip hop album, to my mind, which features live guest appearences of legendary Jazz-Funk or Soul-Jazz musicians like Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers and Lonnie Liston Smith. In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of this classic album UMe/Urban Legends will be releasing a 3LP deluxe edition which includes the original album, the instrumentals and a third bonus LP of rare remixes. As much as I liked Gang Starr, I was never quite sure about getting this one due to not being big on jazz music. Guru's Jazzmatazz 1, originally released in 1993, is one of the first albums to combine a live jazz band with hip hop production and rapping.
