Description

To put this into context, in the UK alone we use a staggering 1.3 million tonnes of tissue a year, according to the Confederation of Paper Industries. That’s estimated to be around 127 rolls per consumer every year.

Our Impact | Who Gives A Crap UK

We put the toilet papers through a series of tests in the Good Housekeeping Institute, looking at how well the tissues tear along the perforations, assessing absorbency, and seeing how strong the sheets remain when wet. We also sent the products out to a panel of testers to get their verdicts on how soft the toilet paper is, their likes, dislikes and whether they’d buy it or recommend it. We put the market-leaders to the test to find the best ones, examining some eco-credentials and taking everything from softness to subscription services into account. Of the two types of toilet paper, the 100% recycled version is more environmentally friendly as an existing resource is being repurposed and reused, which significantly reduces carbon emissions and environmental impact. Every year, over 100-million people part ways with single-use plastic for a whole month during Plastic Free July. By making small yet significant changes, participants reduce their plastic waste in favour of cleaner streets and oceans. As it only takes 30 days to change a habit, these changes will hopefully remain far beyond the end of the month. Made entirely from recycled cellulose — natural fibres such as wood and paper — this toilet paper is soft and boasts good absorbency and perforations, but the sheets are narrow. While bamboo may be more environmentally-friendly than wood, it is still a raw material. The benefit of 100% recycled toilet paper is that it can be made without using new materials, providing a use for paper collected through recycling schemes, which can be sourced in the UK. It doesn’t tend to be as soft as bamboo, but it’s often made more locally. You would have gathered that WGAC are an ethical company with some good sustainability initiatives. They're a small British startup that came top of our strength and softness test and also the most affordable (best value is a box of unwrapped 48 rolls). They're partnership with the Rainforest Trust saves endangered wildlife and protects our planet by creating rainforest reserves. Bazoo also aim to please everyones bums by offering wrapped, unwrapped, white or unbleached rolls.Toilet paper manufacturers are few and far between in Australia, which comes with a cost. Those places who do produce it also have their own brands.

Toilet paper that builds toilets | Who Gives A Crap UK

Who Gives A Crap are a B Corp Certified company (and have been since 2016), meaning they’ve been officially assessed as a for-profit business who also acts as a force for good. You can see their B Lab marks here. Where the product is made also has an impact — a lot of bamboo is grown in China and some bamboo toilet paper is subsequently manufactured in China. This can impact the eco-credentials depending on how the the product is then transported, as air-freighted items have a high carbon footprint compared to other methods of transport. This is exactly what other bamboo-based toilet roll companies – both Bazoo and Bumboo who are based in the UK. They sell both unwrapped and wrappped versions of their loo rolls. Read my Bumboo toilet paper review and Bazoo toilet roll review here. If you haven’t tried recycled toilet roll paper before, there is a difference in feel. This is because the fibres have been used before, are shorter on a micro level and not quite as strong as virgin paper fibres. If you’re looking for a more eco friendly toilet roll, go with recycled. If you’re looking for a more luxury feel one, go with bamboo. Naked Sprout do a good sustainable bamboo toilet roll too, as do Bumboo. You can read my Naked Sprout review and Bumboo review here.Buy One Plant One' is one of Bumboo 's pledges and it's committed to planting a tree for every box of bamboo toilet paper sold. The company is partnered with the Eden Reforestation Projects, a charity that works to reduce extreme poverty within communities affected by the impact of deforestation. For me, I was obsessed with the idea of no longer buying rolls of toilet paper that came in that annoyingly thin clear plastic that’s so hard for consumers to recycle. And the onus falls on to us to deal with it, not the huge companies producing it. Most standard toilet paper is made from virgin wood; that is, wood from trees that is transformed into tissue, often using harsh chemicals which can be damaging to the environment, as well as causing deforestation.
