At first I thought the main character a little silly, since he did not believe in the supernatural, but did believe in the paranormal and telepathy. David's inner psychological baggage is as important here as the external goings-on at Edbrook; and as noted above, there is some real philosophical depth here, not just scares for scares sake. As each dark secret is unveiled and terrible, malign forces are unleashed, he will fear for his very sanity.

Some readers have been troubled by the fact that the investigator is willing to believe in some paranormal phenomena but not others; I did not find this a problem. But there's no splatter-punk; the horror here is mainly psychological (though that can be potentially lethal). The story itself is entertaining, though not particularly unique and did feel quite dated (originally written in the 80s) but it was quite chilling at times. Dal passato oscuro e misterioso, David, si trova ora a risolvere situazioni che alla maggior parte della gente farebbe rizzare i capelli. In 2010, he was made the Grand Master of Horror by the World Horror Convention and was also awarded an OBE by the Queen for services to literature.

David Ash goes into this investigation as a skeptic, trying to prove that there are plausible explanations for people’s ideas of the paranormal, only unknowingly being a guest by the very specters he has yet to believe. Three nights in which David Ash, there to investigate a haunting, will be the victim of horrifying and maleficent games. There are games to be played at this place, nightmarish pastimes of a deadly and maleficent nature, and only when they are done will Edbrook's dreadful secret be disclosed. I was pretty much fully committed to declaring this a painfully average haunted house story, but the final 1/4 really elevated the hell out of this tale. As for the writing, it is also excellent too 🙂 As you’d expect from a slightly older ghost story, this novel’s third-person narration often uses a fairly formal and descriptive style that allows for a lot of intense atmosphere, psychological depth and a gradually-building ominous mood throughout the story. So if you fancy something sophisticated and extremely well written by a British master then look no further.

He whirled around to face whatever it was rushing towards him, but was struck by a powerful force so that he hurtled backwards, the wall catching his legs, sending him toppling. As he fought to free his arm of syrupy fronds he saw, sinking towards him through those eddying clouds, a silhouette, a shape whose arms were outstretched, as if crucified, whose flimsy robe billowed and swayed with the currents, whose black hair spread outwards in Gorgonian tresses. Part of the Rats trilogy, international bestseller James Herbert's Domain pits man against mutant rats, who are back with a vengeance.

So, he wanders across the street to the local pub and has a drink before phoning his boss, Kate, to ask about the case. But after reading this page-turner, I'd surmise that Herbert earned his status a different way: by providing serious readers with well-crafted, good-quality, extremely effective fiction, which is exactly what this is. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages. of our deliveries are made by Royal Mail as we think they give the best service and cover all areas of the UK. The end explanation of the "why" was pitiful, and any explanation of the "how" was just non-existent.Yes, it is at its scariest when you actually take the time to think about what you’re reading – but it is an absolutely expert melding of the kind of complex, subtle and ominous horror you’d find in something like Shirley Jackson’s “The Haunting Of Hill House” and the more intense horror you’d expect from a 1980s horror novel. It's a ghost story with atmospheric depictions of an old house, an overgrown garden and a scary forest. In this first story, paranormal investigator (and skeptic) David is invited to a crumbling, lonely mansion in the English countryside to stay and investigate ghostly goings on - and to see if he can prove that these are really happening. Herbert carefully builds the underlying tension of the storyline, interweaving the sub-plots of the developing character relationships, whilst still subtly hinting to the reader an uneasy atmosphere to the whole scenario. Ash shoved the suitcase over onto the backseat and eased himself into the front, keeping the holdall on his lap.

Plus, not only does the lack of modern communications technology add to the feeling of suspense ( eg: the nearest phone box is a mile or two away from Edbrook) but the focus on characterisation and psychology means that this story can often feel timelessly frightening too. The sad thing is that up to the last few pages, and I'm really sorry major Herbert fans, what happens along the way may have been earth shattering in the 80s but well, kind of old hat by now. She confirms that the Mariell siblings are dead and that their ghosts will do anything to keep her and David from leaving. Whether it is the richly-crafted and deeply ominous gothic atmosphere of Edbrook itself, many of the characters, a few disturbing plot twists ( and lots of clever foreshadowing), various psychological elements or even some of the novel’s themes, this is the type of novel that becomes more and more scary the more closely you look at it. He sees Christina and Simon in the gardens outside, and a mysterious young girl hiding behind a tree and staring at him…. It is based on a 1988 novel of the same name by James Herbert, but makes significant changes to the original story. Haunted” is also a novel that builds upon the type of psychological horror that allowed Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel “The Haunting Of Hill House” to set the template for the modern ghost story.
