My biggest failure with a NGK plug was when the earth terminal fell off and was jammed into the top of the piston on my previous modern. That meant me taking the head off which had to have a light skim. Not a job I want to do again as half the car and half the engine had to be stripped to gain access. The guy I was dealing with from Champion told me that they had a 10% failure rate straight from production

In my day job I design special purpose blast machines, one of our customers in the 90's was Champion.Suitable for any points type ignition system, our Powerspark Electronic Ignition Electronic Kits, and other electronic ignition systems. Records indicate jets being done in the '80s on the carb. Car was from the Bay Area and is now in Chicago, so not a ton of altitude difference there. The proper correlation between NGK and Champion is the question, and at the end of the day the colour ought to govern the choice.

I understand the generally preferred plug for TR5/6s is the NGK BP6ES, but note the BP5ES is specifically for use in lead free head - VUX's head is gas-flowed and unleaded. With a CR over 11:1, I haven't dared go to 5s. If you want to try it, I'd try in one cylinder and watch the colour very carefully for signs of overheating. It does this thousands of times each minute. Over time spark plugs start to break down, resulting in a poor spark. A healthy engine needs good clean spark plugs. High quality NGK spark plug which is designed using the latest technology to give optimum performance over the Lawnmowers entire rev. range I think I can safely say that it may have plugs in it from 1999, which is probably good because they are what the long-term owner always ran in it (1970-2000), and the car has only had 4,000 miles put on it since 2004.

He then threw the NKG plugs into a neighbouring field! But coming full circle, you raise an excellent point and I will put in whatever plugs are currently in there and see how she behaves. I had to get rid of the slop in the distributor, replace the throttle shaft bearings (vacuum leak), power valve, accelerator pump diaphragm , and plastic float (replaced with brass) on my Weber 32/36. I have used Champion RN9YCC plugs in my Minor for some time without problems. Currently NGK BP8ES plugs are fitted. But I won't complain after 9 years of being off the road and "under construction", she finally is drivable

The NGK Standard Spark Plug is constructed from durable material that is corrosion and abrasion resistant. The spark plug insulators are made of 99 percent pure alumina silicate, allowing for longer insulator noses for reduced fouling. This spark plug features a triple gasket sealing process that eliminates fuel leakage. It also includes a solid copper core that provides superior heat dissipation and conductivity. This spark plug has resistor that is produced with a glass and carbon mixture, which is fired to ensure superior performance and durability. It has corrugated ribs that prevent flashover and cold rolled threads to inhibit damage to the cylinder head. From what I've seen on this forum the P.I. cars do better with hotter plugs. The above issue about #s 5&6 is a recurring theme too. Some have fattened the plenum to 4" in an effort to correct this. I bought a couple of bp5es to go in numbers 5&6 but still not got round to doing it, also nearly bought a set of the Bosch ones Steve has mentioned but my concern was gapping them correctly as I think they come as 40th but I may be wrong with that. One new Champion failed after about five miles so I swapped it for one of the old ones. The following week another one failed so I threw them in the bin and put four new NGK ones in and never had any more trouble. I have a standard CP 150BHP car and have recently fitted the NGK BP 5 ES plugs. It runs very well on these, better than on the 6ES's.
