Both of the Diamond 9.1's drivers have been replaced for the Diamond 10.1. The new mid/woofer has a 4.9" (125mm) cone of woven Kevlar, a nylon-filled homopolymer chassis with an oversized flange, and, in the cone surround, diamond-pattern ribs intended to smooth the acoustic rolloff. The 1" (25mm) soft-dome tweeter has a metal phase corrector and is claimed to offer smooth, clear reproduction of the high frequencies. The two reflex ports on the 10.1's rear panel (in the 9.1, they were on the front) are intended to reduce the effects of distortion. Electrical connection is via two offset pairs of terminals to allow bi-wiring and easy cable dressing. Blended SRBP Cone Surrounds: The new textured surround allows a large ‘vMax’ apart from providing a compliant driver gasket, which dramatically improved dynamic response. The diamond profiled surround features rim-edge stiffeners which effectively damp cone resonances. The ensuing pursuit of the invading Frost Giants showcases more of this solid bass work, alongside crisp mids and highs that fire across the expansive soundstage. It’s thrilling stuff, managing to sound aggressive and dynamic without stepping over the line into harshness.

The mainstay of Wharfedale is the Diamond series. These have been around for decades, and have consistently been highly reviewed in their price class and award winning speakers. So, yes, they are good speakers. Valdus-Big and massive, really good if you want loud speakers that aren't very detailed but can play at ludicrous decibel levels but without clipping. For almost 30 years, Wharfedale's famous Diamond speakers have served as the classic entry point to true high-fidelity sound, their exceptional value for money earning dozens of awards around the globe. Now, with the introduction of the all-new Wharfedale loudspeakers are so well regarded, above all, for their sonic excellence. Build quality is impeccable and design is focused - resulting in an overall product which is coherent and capable. Wharfedale are an industry leader and consistently produce award-winning and industry-renowned loudspeaker products. Modus Six-Also very detailed with kind of a muddy midrange but got the job done, definitely better for music.

The current Issue of Stereophile Magazine (though it may not be on-line yet) has a review of the Wharfedale Diamond 225 that is generally positive, and ends with the speakers being "Highly Recommended". They have also previously reviewed the Diamond 10.1, which got a rave review, and the Diamond 10.7 which also got a very good review. I believe S tereophile also review the Wharfedale JADE 7, and gave it a very positive review. None of this would be possible without the talented sub, which anchors it all with lean, purposeful bass notes that fuse tightly to the satellites. This little bass box is a revelation, doing its job without making a song and dance about it.

Where I do agree with Mr Fink, however, is his desire to offer young people something affordable to get them started – as he bluntly put it, “high-end is mostly for old people”. With this in mind, his design takes into consideration that small speakers will most likely be placed in bedrooms, dorms or apartments. The result is that the Diamond 12.1 doesn't need a lot of room around it. Naturally, it is best not to set it right up against a wall, but it's fine not far from it. UP CLOSE Their current range includes Reva, Denton, Diamond 11 and Diamond 200 series, D300 and vintage-look Heritage speakers as well as the newer bluetooth DS-2 speakers and Vista 200 subwoofer. The bottom line here was balance but balance that maintained the essential impact from the performance. This music has soul. It had spirit and passion. The Wharfedales egged you on. Go on my son, they cried! CONCLUSION The Diamond 10.1 are definitely worth their price, but they come with little or no discount. Now several member have bought Diamond 10 series speakers, and not a single one is complaining that he paid too much. They are all very satisifed with what they got for what they paid. For Wharfedale, the products are designed in the UK in Huntingdon, Wharfedale’s traditional home. So Peter Comeau, the director of acoustic design, and an ex-writer for the same print magazine that I still write for, HiFI World is based in the UK. The downside is that now I want to upgrade the rest of the home theatre speakers! I love the way the Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 sound and they are plenty good for the use I make of them (playing music in the living room and now watching movies; not too loud because I have neighbours upstairs) so I'd like to keep them and get speakers that fit with them. Wharfedale has also tried to enter other markets. For example, you can buy Wharfedale brand PA equipment. For a while they tried to enter the DJ market with the Valdus and Xarus speaker lines. These were high-powered high-output speakers, that were a bit less refined, but very attractively priced. Perfect for Amateur or small venue DJs. I began by comparing the Diamond speakers to my reference Monitor Audio Bronze 50s. The Bronze 50s look smaller and not quite as well finished as the Diamond 12.1 speakers and, frankly, that’s how they sound too. A low-damping surround was sought too. The Klarity diaphragms are driven by a magnet system with an aluminium compensation ring to, “…minimise the effect of variations in inductance as the voice coil travels.”
