Can I just say, that I will definitely reread this book to feel the utter warm joy I felt the first time I read this. This is probably one of the most realistic portrayal of a confused young adult in terms of choosing their university and the stress and pressure that comes with it. And I would have truly enjoyed if there was more added to Henri's storyline of being Haitian-American because I think that would have added a lot more backstory and culture to this novel.

But what I really appreciated about this book was the level of depth in all other aspects just under the surface. The writing in this novel was okay, but there could have been some more description and word building added to make the story better. She helps Halti see what his dreams could be instead of what he thinks they must be, and they both let down their guard to let each other in. From both the academic and the college pressure, but also the wistfulness as if there’s a clock ticking, where everything will irreversibly changed. I love books with depth and great character development so now your review has me even more excited. He is a star debater and popular student at the prestigious FATE academy, the dutiful first-generation Haitian son, and the trusted dog walker for his wealthy New York City neighbors. Montreal feels like a city that’s gotten a good night’s rest and woken up in time for a bike ride alongside the Saint Lawrence River. I loved the characters of Henry and Corrinne's parents, their friends, and even the teachers at school.

Which we thought would make us happy, or fulfill us, but end up having origins that don’t belong to us. But there’s a lot to unpack from this book other than that, of class privileges and being a child of an immigrant, of being a first generation Haitian-American and how it puts Henri and Corrine on different position and how it fell on him to realize “The American Dream”.

I mentioned in the beginning how Henri is a people person and by that, I mean he talked a lot 😂 Not only on the outside, but also inside his head. Today’s snarky young anti-hero instead looks like Norris, the black French Canadian boy in The Field Guide to the North American Teenager . Although it was still predictable at times and I did question some of our narrators actions and the way they were handled, I enjoyed it a lot and it was the light and fluffy contemporary I needed!
