Description

Even after her tragic death, the strength of her love for her sons remains an enduring inspiration, not only for the two princes, but for the entire world. Her sons express their lasting contempt for the press in different ways: William with a grim, steely obsession with control; Harry with tortured, vocal, frequently ill-judged condemnation, a never-ending flurry of lawsuits, and, finally, a burn-it-all-down gesture that his mother—who, despite her yearning to be free, held tight to her diadem—might have well understood. But neither of them has yet been heard to reflect on how much Diana loved to dance with danger.

It's an established fact that James Patterson is a very talented writer, so when he lends his skills to a Windsor biography I'm already expecting a good read. He didn't disappoint. The book begins as Princess Diana first gets romantically involved with Prince Charles, and ends after the death of Prince Philip and The Queen moving permanently to Windsor Castle in 2022. It doesn't cover anything about The Queen's Platinum Jubilee or her death in September because the book was just released in mid August. But perhaps the most meaningful way the duo keep Princess Diana’s legacy strong is a routine that’s kept to just the two of them. Every year on the anniversary of her August 31 death, the brothers try to meet up and reminisce.

Jane was also asked to give a reading at Harry and Meghan's wedding ceremony last May, one of the myriad ways in which Diana's memory was honored during the day. When William was born in 1982, Frances and Jane were among the first to visit at St. Mary's Hospital in London. "He's lovely!" the prince's grandma told reporters outside. "There's so much happiness." Grandpa John, then 8th Earl Spencer, later said, "He's the most beautiful baby I've seen." Royal fans will devour this well-paced biography that gives new insight into the House of Windsor. You’ll tear through it by sundown and walk away thinking about the Princess of Wales and her two sons with new perspective .” – Men’s Journal

While much has been made of the pair’s fractured relationship, the two seemed at ease during the event, warmly greeting guests and sharing jokes with the small group of attendees.Diana was killed in a car crash on Aug. 31, 1997; her funeral took place on Sept. 6; and then the school term started. Lady Sarah went to visit Harry at Ludgrove for his 13th birthday, on Sept. 15, bringing him the PlayStation that Diana had already bought for him in Paris, and she would continue to visit both boys at their respective schools. (Harry joined William at Eton in 1998.) He had been living in South Africa when Diana died, and he—along with many others—had felt that his sister had been hung out to dry with the media in the wake of her separation and eventual divorce from Prince Charles, who along with then-girlfriend Camilla Parker-Bowles had been painted as villains in the Princess of Wales' fall from royal grace. Earl Spencer was also understandably livid at the press, who had dissected Diana every which way and hounded her literally right up until the tragic end. My mother had just died, and I had to walk a long way behind her coffin, surrounded by thousands of people watching me while millions more did on television,” said Harry in an interview with Newsweek. “I don’t think any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances. I don’t think it would happen today.” Perhaps the area they’ve emphasized most, in part because of Diana, is mental health. During a 1995 interview with the BBC, she talked about self-harm and depression: “When no one listens to you, or you feel no one’s listening to you, all sorts of things start to happen. For instance, you have so much pain inside yourself that you try and hurt yourself on the outside because you want help, but it’s the wrong help you’re asking for.” Sometimes I’d like a time machine…” Diana says as William and Harry grow up, never imagining they’d have less than a lifetime together. Even after she’s gone, her sons follow their mother’s lead—and her heart. As the years pass and William and Harry grow into adulthood and form families of their own, they carry on Diana’s name, her likeness, and her incomparable spirit.
