Description

Nestled high among the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvania, lies a lush green valley which the Native Americans have named Buffalo Valley. Very few immigrants have managed to tame the wilderness of the American frontier to settle in such a lush valley - named Penn's Creek by the settlers - yet the handful of settlers who were successful had lived peacefully among themselves and with their Native American neighbors for many years. One such family of settlers was the Leininger family; recently arrived from Germany. Venditta, David (November 26, 2006). "We Are Now the Frontier". The Morning Call. Tribune Publishing.

Massacre at Buffalo Valley is a gripping Western film that follows the story of a group of settlers who find themselves in the middle of a violent conflict with a band of Native Americans. The film, directed by Jared Bentley and stars Kelly Greyson and Natalie Racoosin among others, is set in the late 1800s in the midst of the Wild West era. The defendant targeted his victims because he hated the Jewish community and Muslim community,” Randy Grossman, US attorney for the Southern District of California, previously said. a b c "Buffalo shooting kills 10: Live updates". Barbara is taken deep into the wilderness, but continues to hold on to the hope that she will someday be reunited with her little sister. Although she is adopted into the Indian tribe, there is a longing deep inside Barbara's soul that cannot be denied. She knows that she must escape - yet the penalty she will incur if she is caught is certain death. However, Barbara's dream of eventual freedom only grows stronger.

The theme of Alone Yet Not Alone is based on Deuteronomy 8:2 “Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands.” (NLT) On October 25, 1755, John Harris, founder of Harrisburg, and a party of 40 men who came up the river to investigate the John Penn's Creek massacre were ambushed by a party of Indians near the mouth of this creek at the head of the Isle of Que about one third of a mile south of this spot. I remember watching live footage of the insurrection on January 6, and seeing signs with sic semper tyrannis, the Latin phrase meaning “thus always to tyrants”. That’s a very specific frame. John Wilkes Booth said it before he assassinated Abraham Lincoln in 1865. We saw it 130 years later in 1995 when Timothy McVeigh murdered 168 people in an Oklahoma City bombing and was wearing a shirt with the phrase. We keep seeing it pop up, and it feels very present here. When we talk about misinformation and disinformation online, it’s like a 21st-century spin on the same problem of conspiracies spreading in different communities. a b c "Gov. After three years of living with the Indians, always longing to be reunited with her sister, and on the verge of an inevitable life change for Barbara, she along with three other captive youths escaped, attempting to reach their home hundreds of miles away. Pennsylvania had been founded by Quakers, and that religion's core doctrine of pacifism meant that the province's Assembly had always refused to establish a permanent military force. As the settlements were decimated, Governor Robert Hunter Morris and the Assembly argued over whether or not proprietary estates should be taxed to raise money to defend them. In desperation, hundreds of Berks County German settlers marched on Philadelphia on November 25, 1755 [37] carrying with them the scalped and mutilated bodies of some of their murdered neighbors. They dragged the bodies through the streets with placards attached declaring that these were the victims of the Quaker policy of non-resistance. They then surrounded the House of Assembly and placed the rotting corpses in its doorways. [38] Benjamin Franklin in 1759, as painted by Benjamin Wilson (1721-1788)

Two of the Lenape then traveled to the Leininger household, approximately a half-mile away. There, they demanded rum, but none was in the house so they were given tobacco instead. After they smoked a pipe, they stated "We are Allegheny Indians, and your enemies. You must all die!". They shot Sebastian Leininger and tomahawked his 20-year-old son before taking his daughters, 12-year-old Barbara and 9-year-old Regina, captive. [22] Mrs. Leininger [ clarification needed] and another son were away at a mill and were thus spared. [23] This is a short and very easy read. Unfortunately, those may be the kindest things I can say for it. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't very good. The family introduced in the opening chapters is as flat and plastic-perfect as a department store window display. The characters are similarly rendered, like mannequins posed and positioned for each scene with sadly artificial dialogue. Once the action begins, the story and telling both improve but not greatly. As another reviewer noted, the passage of time is also very uneven, often changing abruptly with little if any explanation or exploration. And though I enjoy a good Christian-themed read, this is so heavy-handed that the characters are hardly more than idealized caricatures. It reads almost like propaganda, which is a real shame considering that the basis of the tale is factual and quite interesting. In addition, though the Native American Indians are not demonized, their beliefs are summarily dismissed as child-like and foolish in a rather insulting exchange. Finally, the story itself leaves me with several nagging issues, questionable turns, and timeline inconsistencies. After the French and Indian War ended in 1763 with British victory, the Lenape were among a number of Native American tribes who were dissatisfied with British postwar policies and with settlers continuing to move into the Ohio Country in violation of the Treaty of Easton. They took part in Pontiac's Rebellion from 1763 until 1764, a multi-tribal effort to counter British control of the Great Lakes region, Ohio and Illinois. The effort failed and under peace negotiations with British Colonel Henry Bouquet, the Native Americans were obligated to surrender all of the captives in their possession. Approximately 200 captives were rounded up and brought to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and word was sent out around the colonies for those who might have family members among them to come. [69]Clearly, this book is targeted for youth. While young-adults and even adults might find it interesting, youth will get the most out of it. The style of the story is simple, yet never talks down to the youth it reaches. The youngest of the 10 people killed in the Buffalo shooting was laid to rest". NPR. May 21, 2022.
