Time Lapse The Unifi Dream Machine (UDM for short) is a great choice for the heart of your home network. If you are building a DIY Smart Home or DIY CCTV system like me, you are probably interested in this flagship networking device from Unifi. The UDM and UniFi OS Consoles in general were a big change in the UniFi line. Before, it was easy to run the UniFi Network application anywhere, and add any devices you wanted. With the UDM, you’re forced to use the built-in Network application, meaning you can’t add a UDM to a Cloud Key or self-hosted UniFi Network controller. In the absence of the UDM Pro, Ubiquiti’s UniFi products that use the UniFi Controller – the USG and USG-PRO-4 – are relatively underpowered compared with the ER-4. Despite the USG-PRO-4 being more expensive than the ER-4, it possesses only half the number of processor cores, with a significantly reduced maximum SQM throughput (200-250 Mbps). The UDM line of products are essentially enterprise-level network appliances that combine the following functions into a single device:While many routers are able to support (WAN to LAN) throughputs of close to 1 Gbps in their default modes, switching on SQM (if available) usually reduces available throughputs dramatically. While throughput reductions may not affect broadband users with relatively modest speeds, up to now, broadband users with ultrafast broadband connections (with speeds in excess of 300 Mbps) have not (until the release of the UDM Pro) been well served. Designed for convenient monitoring and complete management of your camera surveillance system, the UniFi Protect Controller allows you to set up, configure, and monitor your UniFi cameras using a graphical user interface. You can install it on the UDM Pro (only when an HDD, not included, is installed), and there are no separate software, licensing, hosting, or support fees. Features Over the years, Ubiquiti have changed their naming conventions. Currently, the UXG-Lite and UXG-Pro are “ UniFi Gateways” while the UDR, UDM-Pro, UDM-SE, and UDW are “ UniFi Cloud Gateways”. Previously, the UXG-Pro was “Routing Offload”, and the Cloud Gateways were “UniFi OS Consoles” or “Gateway Consoles”. Another reason to get the UDM-Pro is if you would rather use a separate PoE switch with more 802.3af ports or a higher wattage. NOTE: The UDM-SE already had Wireguard VPN support, and since the UniFi OS 3.0.20 release, the UDM-Pro also supports Wireguard VPN Server. Comparison Table – UDM-SE vs. UDM-Pro

The UDM Pro includes the UniFi Network Controller so you canmanage your UniFi Switches and APs. It can also run the UniFiProtect software for convenient monitoring and completemanagement of your camera surveillance system. Video recordingsare stored on the built-in NVR (hard drive not included) and canbe easily accessed using the UniFi Protect mobile app. Via remoteaccess, you can securely view the recordings that are privatelystored on the UDM Pro rather than a third-party server. This has been upgraded from 1Gbe to a 2.5GbE RJ45 port. It should not be a surprise that you can get internet connections at or faster than 1Gbs and this will allow you to take full advantage of that. Connect your computer to one of the 8 Ethernet LAN ports, and assign yourself an IP in the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet (not 192.168.1.1)For outdoor applications, shielded Category 5 (or above) cabling should be used for all wired Ethernet connections and should be grounded through the AC ground of the power supply.

Login to your UI.com account, or create one. An account is required, and you must have internet connectivity Playlists can be created with a configurable live camera feed rotation. Define the cameras you want included in the playlist and how long you want them to appear on the screen before moving on to the next live feed. Note: The UDM-Pro's voltage output range is 100-240 volts. Ensure that your power source can accommodate this, as well as any other devices sharing the UDM-Pro's power supply.

Enterprise 8 PoE

Ubiquiti is still going to be offering the modular options for those customers who still need it as in some use cases, having everything under one device isn’t actually practical. But for a small business or home environment the UDM covers a lot of needs and isn’t that expensive when comparing the individual UniFi components and the UDM-Pro isn’t much more on top of that. The main differences between the two are the access point the UDM has, the dual WAN the UDM-Pro has as well as its ability to run UniFi Protect, UniFi Access, UniFi Talk and UniFi LED on top of UniFi Network. The steps to setup the device through the app are similar, just make sure you have Bluetooth enabled and you are connected to the UDM-Pro in your Bluetooth settings. Remote Management and UniFi OS: It’s Complicated

These act as their own controller and can’t be joined to a Cloud Key or other UniFi Network controller. LTE Failover Redundancy Supports the UniFi LTE device for automatic failover to the LTE cellular network. If the wired WAN fails, it will automatically switch to the UniFi LTE, keeping your network online 1. This is described as “for full UniFi OS Application experience” which is a clever way of saying not just for protect. So while I understand you can use it for video capture for one or two camera's that's not completely what it's there for and I'm not sure would actually be a good idea - just add a surveillance hard drive.
