Description

As with most other consumer bench grinders, the Titan comes with coarse and fine grinding discs, namely 30-grit and 60-grit wheels, but as an added bonus, a useful brush wheel is also included in the box. Unfortunately, however, not a lot of thought has gone into the use of wire wheels on the Titan grinder as the included one can sometimes partially brush against the wheel guard securing bolts which protrude a fair amount. Continuous striking of these bolts with the wire wheel will eventually damage them making removal of the wheel guard more problematic. One option is not to use the wheel guard at all when using a wire wheel but this poses an increased safety risk to the operator and is not recommended.

You can then securely bolt down the grinder to hold it firm in operation. You can also bolt down replaceable bits of plywood onto a steel workbench to have a soft working area. It’s a good idea to also bolt down a good bench vise. So what size to get? After deciding on whether the bench grinder size will fit in the workshop space allocated for it, choosing which size is best is to some extent a matter of personal preference. The size of the wheel does affect some characteristics of the bench grinder, like a larger wheel has a faster angular velocity at the grinding edge affecting the rate of frictional heating, or smaller wheels are more curved at the grinding point which can cause slight differences in bevel formation, however, for the most part, the effect on actual function is minor. Power Apart from the magnifying lens in the guard, this is a great grinder. My personal feeling is the magnifier is not useful and is distracting so it will be replaced with a standard one. The grinder is very quiet and well balanced. The built in lights are a great feature, more so if you have a dark shed. You can generally avoid this by using a rough grit wheel and slow rotation speeds, although this isn’t always practical. Lower bench grinding speeds help keep heat build-up under control - If available, use a lower bench grinding speed to keep the heat build-up, on both the object being ground and the grinding wheel itself, under better control.Grinders intended for DIY home use usually have 6” disks. They typically run at speeds of 3400 to 3600 RPM and are suitable for most basic home improvement jobs. Know the maximum speed of the grinding wheel and the bench grinder - When purchasing new grinding wheels, make sure that the maximum speed of the wheel is not lower than the rotational speed of the bench grinder it is to run on otherwise spinning the wheel at too high a speed can cause it to disintegrate during use and presents a safety hazard.

For most other applications, however, you will likely need to adjust the speed depending on the material you are grinding. In particular, you will want to set your grinder to slower speeds when sharpening chisels, to avoid overheating the metal. The Best way to stand a bench grinder is to simply bolt it down to a steel workbench, this is preferable over a timber bench, although a timber bench will work. Coarse grit ranging from 16 to 24 grit, medium grit wheels range from 36 to 60 grit, and fine grit wheels range from 80 to 120 grit. Although they have smaller wheels than their 8” counterparts, many grinders with 6” wheels are surprisingly heavy.Other than that, for commercial and industrial use, you will get a much better life span with a pro brand under daily use. And therefore you should consider if you want a slow or fast speed bench grinder. You will definitely get more use out of an 8” grinder and a variety of wheels than you would with a 6” grinder and the same set of wheels. Choosing the best bench grinders The BG150CX bench grinder from Sealey is the first member of a range of bench grinders from the company. The BG150CX represents their most basic model, which means it has the minimum of features but also the lowest of prices. Like many other budget machines, it belongs to a family of ‘generic’ machines that are often sourced from the same manufacturer, coloured and then badged with the insignia of the retail distributor, in this case, Sealey. Steady tool maintenance from this light, yet stable performer with special sharpening wheel & holder Remember if a bench grinder is a brush-type motor you could use a rheostat or a dimmer circuit to control the speed on a pro-brand tool. Should you get a 6 or 8-inch table grinder?

The Sealey BG150XLW/98 is a powerful bench grinder that comes with a grinding wheel and one wire wheel. It has a 370W motor that is strong enough to grind some of the harder metals, and it can be used for longer than budget models before it needs to be given a rest to cool down. The wire wheel is useful for removing old coatings on metal objects such as paint or rust and of course other wheels can be swapped into place of the grinding wheel or the wire wheel as needed. The unit runs smoothly, with little vibration, but it still needs to be bolted down to the workbench to ensure it does not move at all. Niggles with the Sealey bench grinder are common to most bench grinders in this price range, for instance, care still needs to be taken not to put too much pressure on the spinning wheels as this will cause them to slow down, reducing its ability to effectively grind or polish. Dress the bench grinder periodically - Grindstone surfaces slowly wear down and often become clogged with metal filings during use. To rejuvenate the grinding surface, use a diamond-studded dressing tool to eliminate the metal filings and to expose fresh grit on the grindstone wheel surface. One way to be sure that you have dressed the wheel sufficiently is to draw a pencil line on the wheel and continue the dressing process until the pencil line disappears. Note, however, that the dust created from grindstone dressing is hazardous to your health so make sure to wear a dust mask!White wheels are better for DIYers - White-coloured wheel s (as opposed to grey or light blue ones) are gentler grinding wheels that make it easier to achieve a sharp edge on a tool, however, they tend to wear down faster than their darker brethren. For DIYers who tend to use bench grinders on more of an occasional basis, these types of wheels are therefore usually more appropriate. Use the appropriate grindstone grits for the job at hand - Coarser grit wheels will remove material faster leaving less time for the tool or the wheel to heat up. Therefore, use harsher wheels when a lot of material needs to be removed. In contrast, finer wheels are used for removing smaller amounts of material, such as when finishing off a blade edge. However, if the blade is chipped or is overly dull and more material needs to be removed to reform a uniform blade edge, a coarser wheel may be needed initially.

This slow-speed bench grinder spins at 2850 RMP and is the best pro-choice for sharpening chisels if you don’t want a DIY variable-speed bench grinder. My name is Aaron, and thank you for reading my article. As a qualified carpenter, I share some tips here at Bangingtoolbox to help provide better DIY information on the internet. You could set up a lamp in your work area of course. But having a light attached to your grinder means never having to reposition it when you need to move it out of the way or when you need better illumination. Larger bench grinders are useful for basic sharpening of chisel blades and the like and metal-polishing tasks, and you will save money in the long run because you won’t have to keep changing the wheels. One notably nice feature about the Makita bench grinder is that the housing over each wheel contains an integrated light that lights up the grinding area. However, it should be noted that these lights only come on when the machine is in operation whereas ideally we would have liked to see them have a separate control switch so that they could remain permanently on if desired. Ceramic wheels are usually blue or pink, or a combination of these two colors. How to set up your bench grinder Fast speeds aren’t usually an issue for heavy-duty jobs for which you will probably want your grinder going at full bore the entire time. An integrated light isn’t essential, but it does come in handy for working in low-light conditions. Even if your workshop is brightly lit, having a light on your bench grinder will let you see the workpiece more easily. Without a variable speed control, you will have to constantly turn the motor on and off to slow the wheel down. In addition to placing undue stress on the starter mechanism, this can get very annoying after a while.
