To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Louise's wealth protects her from most things, and unladylike is certainly a word she would embrace. Despite the title, most of the action takes place on dry land (thankfully, as I'm not a huge fan of boat based historical novels!

Louise’s companion in her endeavours is Gilles Barenton who has his own reasons for wanting to escape his past. From the start, with a young woman in Paris to claim her inheritance, this book is full of adventure and spirit, with the main protagonist, Louise, far ahead of her day.Unfortunately, because I went into this book with the previous ones in mind, approach the book with the right expectations and suspend disbelief. After the Burning Chambers and The City of Tears, The Ghost Ship is the third part of the story that started when Minou Joubert was nineteen in 1562.

This is the third book in this series, and not having read the previous two I thought I may be a bit lost. The story is definitely sweeping in scope, covering many locations and involving a large cast of characters during an interesting period of history. Mosse has a really fantastic writing style, making sure to include appropriate terms but not getting so technical that she loses her readers. A tighter focus would have made it a faster more interesting read witout losing any of the affection for the characters. Her quest to break the rules is heart-pounding and vibrant and taking the journey with Louise ,and following her adventure, is everything you could want in a pirate story .We kennen allemaal de slavenhandel tussen Afrika en Noord-Amerika, maar we zijn ons minder bewust van de eerdere slaven praktijken zoals deze van de 17de eeuw.

Readers of the first two books are left hanging as that secondary story in the prologues of the first two books makes no appearance here. Then Louise's story is broken up by another (which makes more sense once they meet as adults but as separate childhood backstories they seem very distant at first.
