The camera has to be turned on to be controlled by the remote, but it will last four hours in standby mode, so it’s not rinsing the battery too much, and I only noticed about a 10% reduction in recording time with the remote connected. Editing via the app now comes with a new Snap Wizard mode, which allows you to move your phone or swipe to reframe.

Capturing great footage on a motorbike can be tough; where do you put the camera for the best angle? Do you film the road ahead or you the rider? What happens if your mates are riding next to you, and you want to capture them? It opens up some incredible possibilities and lets you convincingly mimic a drone. Try it next time you’re capturing a crowd or filming a car commercial on a budget. Is the Insta360 ONE RS a novelty or a serious filmmaking device? Unique in the market, the ONE RS is designed to appeal to anyone who would normally consider a GoPro yet yearns to at least have a go at 360º.

When shooting 360 footage at 5.7K, there are options for 30fps, 25fps and 24fps, giving a good spread for standard filming (I prefer 25fps as it makes for a simple to work with timeline). Of course, another advantage of being able to edit the viewpoint after filming is that you can put the camera at the side of the road and ride past, then pan in post-production, giving the impression of a videographer standing there. Compatible with iOS mobile devices with chips A11 or above and iOS version 10.0 or above , including iPhone SE 2, iPhone 8, iPhone 8P, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 mini, iPad Air(2020), iPad Pro and newer iPad models. The overall design is smart and attractive and the aluminium components make it feel solid in the hand. With a 19.5cm folded length and a weight of around 170g it’s still nice and portable when travelling. Unlike a lot of its more budget rivals, the ATUMTEK’s mount is rotatable, allowing for nicely balanced shooting in both portrait and landscape orientations.

Both lenses can capture in raw – as DNG files – as well as JPG. New for this version is that its boosted processing power enables the handling of still images in various resolutions up to 48MP, stills and video in Active HDR, and a new 6K widescreen mode that uses an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and a frame rate of either 24p or 25p. More importantly, its flagship video mode – 4K 60fps – now comes with Insta360’s impressive gimbal-like FlowState Stabilization.Android devices with Snapdragon 845 and above chips, including Samsung Galaxy S9, Xiaomi Mi 8 or newer models. The rubberised handgrip doubles up as a tripod base and an iOS and Android compatible Bluetooth remote is included for hands-free shooting. It’s designed to work with the One X2, One R or One X and allows you to control the camera remotely (the clue’s in the name). This can of course be very handy if the camera’s out of reach, but be warned – pressing the square button changes modes, so you could easily switch into timelapse, for instance, and not notice. The mode is displayed on the remote’s screen, but when you’re riding, the last thing you want to do is study this. The GoPro Max comes with a grip that automatically crops the stand and adjusts in real time. However, many find the crop isn’t done well and there’s a clear crop line that looks weird as well. The probable reason would be the grip’s close distance.

Insta360 has so far been very good at getting useful updates out, including the desktop and mobile apps. The Insta360 One X2 is a relatively modest but solid update to our favorite 360 camera, with the waterproofing, new display and new editing features all adding to its versatility and social media potential. For a vlog-like shot where you’re the main subject, we recommend a distance of about 50-70 centimeters. Ultimately, it’s a lot of fun coming up with new mounting positions for a 360 camera, but I also find it saves a lot of time, and gives great results. Though there are a plethora of new video-centric modes on the ONE RS, the six-axis gyroscope FlowState Stabilization remains the most important. Like GoPro’s HyperSmooth, this in-camera algorithm creates a super-smooth ‘gimbal-like’ stabilization with no editing required. It works on 4K 60fps video captured with the 4K Boost Lens.

Video clips are up to 30 minutes in length, which is more than enough for anything I’ve done, though film longer than that and you will notice a gap of a few seconds between the end of the first clip and the start of the second. The way I produce road test videos means it’s just me and the bike (or sometimes multiple bikes and riders), but no videographer to help me get the shots. That used to mean finding secure but interesting places to mount my GoPros, swapping them around repeatedly to ensure I got enough variety for the video. It can be a bit of a fiddle to pair in the first place, but make sure you follow the instructions online to update the camera’s firmware if necessary, then turn it on, then the remote. Reset the remote by pressing both buttons together than go to ‘Bluetooth remote’ in the settings on the camera without the app connected. The Insta360 app really impressed us. It’s super-stable and reliable, attaching a phone to the Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition without problems and sharing files faster than the first-gen model. It certainly feels like trading files over WiFi is faster than on the previous version, though some of its headline features – such as 6K widescreen mode and 48MP PureShot photos – can’t be used with the app; you’ll need to use the (free) Insta360 Studio software on a desktop computer for those. Performance The clamp that comes in the motorcycle mounting kit proved great when clamping to the bars (and the view stays steady regardless of how you turn them), but I broke mine

With a full 1hr 28mins of filming time, the Insta360 One R has plenty of battery life for me to get an entire day filming everything I need for a road test. The One R gave me 58 minutes with the standard battery, which was fine for me, but this is an impressive boost. One of the main things that helped set the Insta360 One X apart from its rivals was its polished app and user-friendly software. That continues to be the case on the One X2, although the addition of new editing features can make its 'Shot Lab' initially feel a little overwhelming. The Insta360 One X2 is a 5.7K camera, which sounds incredible, but that’s filming everything. Really –everything.

Capture the moment with our pick of the best selfie sticks

If you set the One X2 to ‘standard’ filming mode it’ll use just one lens and give a wide angle, stabilised view with a resolution of either 1920x1080, or 2560x1440 (just under 2.7K). It’s a touchscreen, of course, and it’s a cinch to swipe between all the main modes and find other options by swiping up and down.
