The newly formed team of Isagi, Nagi, and Barou head to their next rival battle, where they face Kunigami, Chigiri, and Reo. Isagi knows their victory will depend on the team's ability to form a "chemical reaction" with their play styles. Isagi and Nagi have a fluid synergy, but Barou seems to be chafing against his new teammates... Who will emerge victorious from the battle of egos?!

With Yusuke Nomura’s dynamic and detailed artwork, the soccer matches come to life, capturing the sport’s speed, intensity, and strategic elements. The panels exude energy, showcasing the characters’ raw emotions and the explosive action on the field. Rin is a total extreme example of what Ego is after and he basically dismisses everybody else and, naturally for this sort of series, he is right to do so. He’s able to perform some moves here that should basically qualify him for superhero status (they sure do drop the word ‘quirk’ in here again too). I like that Isagi’s teamed with Bachira, naturally, but the third candidate ends up being a rather fun little departure from what seems like the obvious choices for the pairing. Mixing up the interactions keeps the story fresher amidst the chaos of these matches. The story begins with Japan’s elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which prompts the Japanese Football Union to start a program scouting high school players who will begin training in preparation for the 2022 Cup. Isagi Yoichi, a forward at Ichinan High School, receives an invitation to this program when his team fails to get to Nationals. Encouraged to engage in teamwork, he had passed to his less-skilled teammate – who missed – without trying to make the game-changing goal by himself. This failing, and his invitation to matriculate into this new program, establishes a basis in discussing the ideas of egoism and individual effort in sports, which appears throughout the manga and anime.

After a disastrous defeat at the 2018 World Cup, Japan’s team struggles to regroup. But what’s missing? An absolute Ace Striker, who can guide them to the win. The Football Association is hell-bent on creating a striker who hungers for goals and thirsts for victory, and who can be the decisive instrument in turning around a losing match…and to do so, they’ve gathered 300 of Japan’s best and brightest youth players. Who will emerge to lead the team…and will they be able to out-muscle and out-ego everyone who stands in their way? We end with a definite bit of a hook for the next volume, setting up what amounts to a rescue mission and the set-up for this is so brimming with text that you can practically hear the slashfic writers warming up their word processors. This is but a prelude, as Isagi levels up and his success pushes him into the next section, a convoluted set of three-on-three matches that ends up with somebody being drafted to the winning team and losers fighting it out and somebody going home.

Chapter 048: The Beauty of the Parabola ( その 放物線 ( ほうぶつせん ) の 美 ( うつく ) しさに , Sono Hōbutsusen no Utsukushi sa ni ?) Naturally Isagi is being turned into a competitive egomaniac as a result of this ludicrous plan, which the book attempts to dilute somewhat by introducing the incredibly annoying top team that they play against. And they are A-class annoying. From one guy who won’t stop having a nervous breakdown to the long-legged guy who only cares about style. Which leaves our number one ranked player, Rin, who is the closest we’ve seen yet to having a definitive villain on the pitch (instead of running the program).
