Matthew Perry claimed he 'didn't remember' after he proposed to former fiancée Molly Hurwitz when he was 'high as a kite' in rehab facility Anybody with the slightest interest of WW2 in Italy should read this book. It’s autobiographical. Eric Newby, at the tender age of 22 was an escaped POW and his account shows how truly generous and courageous ordinary Italians were to young British men. They reasoned their own sons were far away, fighting, and it was their duty to help other people’s sons. Despite their own difficulties in procuring food, and with the threat of execution if they were discovered harbouring POWs, they went to great lengths to look after Eric and others. This happened up and down the length of Italy and after the war, the British government was rather pathetic in the way they recognised these acts. In his Epilogue, Newby writes: “As is usual when official attempts are made to repay something with cash which was given freely at the tie out of kindness of heart, a great deal of ill-will was created in this case by the Treasury, or whoever held the purse-strings, who decreed that any money that was disbursed to these people in 1946 should be at the old, pre-Armistice rate of exchange… which by now was absolutely nothing.” Shame! Tyler Christopher's Charmed co-star Alyssa Milano and fellow General Hospital actor Bryan Craig lead tributes to the star after his death at 50 For the next three months, he is on the run, helped and sheltered by extremely poor anti-Fascist Italian peasants whose material lives would have been greatly improved by the sums of money the Germans paid to informers. Slightly Foxed introduces its readers to books that are no longer new and fashionable but have lasting appeal. Good-humoured, unpretentious and a bit eccentric, it's more like having a well-read friend than a subscription to a literary review. In 1942, Eric Newby ( A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush, Slowly Down the Ganges) was captured in a botched attempt to raid a Sicilian airfield from the sea. He spent much of the Second World War in prison camps, first in Italy and later in Czechoslovakia. But in the autumn of 1943, he enjoyed a few months of freedom when he escaped to the high villages of the Apennines. There he found hearty and generous Italian farmers who were willing to risk everything to give him refuge. Everyone he encounters is, quite understandably, scared to death. A friendly doctor drops him off at a safe house, but, the moment the doctor has gone, the owner tells Newby that he will have to go.

He believes that the Germans are in the wrong and, because of this, they will lose the war. ‘We must. We have to.’ He advises Newby to pass the winter in the Apennines, and to wait for the spring before moving on. Newby writes about the Italian army being in dire need of food and remarks that in Britain there were organizations that worked together to support the troops. In contrast, in Italy, there were "no volunteer ladies dishing out fish and chips to them, and great squelchy, jam sandwiches, and cups of orange-colored tea, and, saying "Hello" and asking where they came from, making them feel that they were doing something worthwhile which somebody cared about." For me, this was probably the highlight of my reading experience along with the description of the clothing that the prisoners were wearing. To be extensively revised soon at the cost of a few inevitable spoilers; please do not 'like' this old version until you've compared it with the new one.]As always Newby writes in an incredibly engaging way. Even when he is of on a random tangent, the writing is so enjoyable that the strange nature of his topic doesn't matter. He writes honestly and realistically, not making himself the centre of the story, but quite rightly, those risking much more to help a stranger.
