The rules presented here in the Starter Set distill the rules from the core book. There are no new rules introduced. However, how the rules are presented, the clarity, and copious examples, set this rule book apart from the core book.

In this scenario, you take on the role of Vasana, Daughter of Farnan (one of the pre-generated adventurers)*. She’s a formidable hero, capable warrior, trusted leader, and dedicated initiate of the Orlanth Adventurous cult. Vasana has allied herself with Kallyr Starbrow, leader of the Sartarite rebellion against the Lunar Empire. Kallyr is about to lead her troops against the Lunar Empire’s war leader, Fazzur Wideread, at Dangerford. Dangerford is a critical crossing on the strategically important river known as “The Creek.” With sides evenly matched, even a single stone could tip the scales one way or the other. Depending on how Vasana carries herself, she alone could sway the battle and change the fate of Dragon Pass. As outlined in my initial Design Diary post, we had several main goals with the RuneQuest Starter Set. Firstand foremost was to make it a wholly accessible product for newcomers to RuneQuest and the world of Glorantha. But another important goal is to make sure the Starter Set also has value to our already-established player base. Too many starter sets are throwaway items or are of no use to veteran players. Not this one!and explore the setting further. A good starter set, whether City of Mist: All-Seeing Eye Investigations Starter Set, the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Starter Set, or the Call of Cthulhu Starter Set will always do that, whereas a bad starter set, or even a mediocre starter set, such as the Sixth World Beginner Box for Shadowrun, Sixth Edition, Dice – Also included is a set of seven high-quality gaming dice, containing all the ones used in RuneQuest. Once we get into the Magic chapter, things become quite shortened compared to the core rulebook. Only spells and rules needed by the adventurers are described, and everything else gets a hint or short write-up, nudging you to get the core rulebook if you want to know more. The material on the Spirit World and Shamanism is short, since neither the adventures of Book 4 nor the pre-generated adventurers would have much to do with it, but there’s enough to whet a new player’s appetite. I really appreciate that because these are some of the game elements that set RuneQuest and Glorantha apart for me. Book 2: The World of Glorantha

This is another great map: it’s both prettier and vastly more legible than the maps from the core rulebook. Somehow, it looks to me, style-wise, like a modernized version of classic Gloranthan maps such as the Dagori Inkarth map from Trollpak. Book 3: SoloQuest The RuneQuest Starter Set contains everything you need to play the world’s best roleplaying game of gods, cults, magic, family, and fantasy! In RuneQuest, everyone uses spells and anyone can be a warrior. The gods provide powers to their mortal worshipers, and can intercede on their behalf. Each RuneQuest adventurer is unique, defined by their Runes, culture, and cult—all chosen by the player. What's Inside These early rules chapters (game system, skills, combat) are occasionally decorated with very nice art pieces plundered from Chaosium’s older books, such as this wonderful duel scene (above) from the mind-blowing Guide to Glorantha.

What’s Inside?

Rather than a stripped-down or abstracted version of the rules, the system would be presented as closely to the regular game line as possible. We wanted this to be an easy step into RuneQuest and Glorantha, as compatible with other products as we could make it.
