Content Advisory: 26 f-words, 64 s-words, 50 d-words; one short sex scene; suicide; miscarriage, including one dream post-miscarriage that was a little gruesome] This was my first book by Briana Cole but definitely not the last I’m so glad I requested this audiobook and was able to read it.

Deven is called to the morgue to identify the body of a woman found dead in her apartment, apparently by drug overdose. They say it is her (half) sister, Kennedy. Behind Her Lives is a mind-bending thriller that has so many twists and turns that reading it felt like being on a speeding train non-stop. The story follows Deven, who finds out her sister Kennedy has died under mysterious circumstances. Unsatisfied with the answers she’s been given she decides to go on an investigation on her own and starts to unravel the lies that surround her sister’s life. While it isn't explicitly stated, it is likely that Louise lives very close nearby - as she is seen walking in Camden at one point in the show. There is profanity. I did notice it was minimal and appeared culturally correct (given my studies and readings).Because Deven’s grief about her sister and a previous loss color her reactions, she is a believable but unreliable character. At times, I wanted to redirect her from her poor decisions, but I admired her loyalty. She was further tested because her father had passed not too long before and her mother, in assisted living, was beginning to have fewer and fewer good days due to dementia. Because what’s behind hereyes, in this instance, is him. She is beautiful, wealthy Scottish heiress Adele, played by The Luminaries’ Eve Hewson. He is working class, Glaswegian heroin addict Rob, played by Game of Thrones’ Robert Aramayo. They meet as teenagers at rehab after the death of Adele’s parents, and realise that they share the ability for their souls to leave their bodies while they sleep and ‘travel’ to other places to spy on other people’s lives. ‘I love this place, I’d stay forever if I could’ Though I thought it strange that Deven’s character admitted that she intentionally didn’t date outside her race, I did appreciate that the author didn’t try to do too much with the love story part of the book. That was not central to the plot and considering all the things Deven was dealing with, I think it’s more realistic to plot the relationship the way Cole did. I’m not sure if the ending is necessarily ‘likable’ but it kinda fit. It’s just not really a ‘feel good’ ending and is a little open. So if you don’t like that kind of ending, it may frustrate you. Unless she plans to do a sequel? Maybe…

You don’t have to tell me because I already know, you’re hooked on Netflix series Behind Her Eyes. So if it’s not coming to terms with the twist ending, laughing at all the memes about the series or Googling the filming locations– you’re probably desperate to find out all there is to know about the Behind Her Eyes cast. Deven thinks she's at the morgue to identify her sisters body, but it turns out not to be her. But where is Kennedy then, if this dead girl is not her. As she investigates her sister's disappearance she slowly starts to realize that maybe she doesn't know her as well as she thought she did. There's the added fact that they're step-siblings, with the same mom and different father's, that causes some drama. Secrets, suspense, and a missing sister-who may not want to be found-are at the center of Briana Cole's latest enthralling multicultural drama. Will appeal to fans of psychological suspense, gritty drama, and listeners of De'Nesha Diamond, Kiki Swinson, Saundra, Wahida Clark, Ashley & JaQuavis, Victoria Christopher Murray, and Shelly Ellis.

I thought Cole did a good job writing the diary entries as if they were from a 11-12 year old. Sometimes authors do a bad job and it sounds too grown-up or too childish, but I thought she wrote it just right! I was pleasantly surprised! The tension and mystery were there throughout the whole book and I liked the main character. My word almighty that ending was beyond a tailspin! Even though I had it figured out, Cole did brilliance in how she unveiled everything, dished it out & wrapped it up! I was left with one very open and sore jaw. Such an amazingly twisted thriller Cole has done! My word almighty. I need more from her like this! Trust me when I say, set aside a piece of your favourite desert / chocolate because you're going to need it at the end of this scrumptious twisted fluffed up ride!

The police think she’s in denial and aren’t treating it as anything other than a routine suicide, so Deven is on her own to find her sister and find out what really happened. Thanks to Tantor Audio, the author and NetGalley for the advance audiobook. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*Opening the door to the police before 8:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning can never lead to anything good, a truism confirmed to Deven Reyonlds when she’s told that her younger sister, Kennedy, is dead by suicide and she’s needed to identify the body. But when shown a picture of the women found in Kennedy’s apartment, Deven is relieved to announce that the person is not her sister. The ME, the police, even her sometimes-boyfriend Justin think she is in the denial stage of grief, but Deven knows she’s right. That doesn’t explain though why the woman was found in Kennedy’s apartment or why Deven can’t locate Kennedy. This is where things get interesting. She starts to learn about a whole other life that her sister lead, and none of it is good. It was an addictive read and I felt for Devan. Life was not being kind to her and things just kept getting worse.

Secrets, suspense, and a missing sister—who may not want to be found—are at the center of Brianna Cole’s latest enthralling multicultural drama. Will appeal to fans of psychological suspense, gritty drama, and readers of De’Nesha Diamond, Kiki Swinson, Saundra, Wahida Clark, Ashley & JaQuavis, Victoria Christopher Murray, and Shelly Ellis. Rob’s obsession with wealth blinkers him to reality. He myopically sees Adele and David’s life only as a flawless fairy tale, callously dismissing Adele’s loneliness and the traumatic deaths of her parents. When Adele first teaches him the ability to quell his nightmares and control his dreams – a gift for which he is supremely ungrateful – Rob conjures up a manor house, a cravat and a butler. Upon his arrival at Adele’s estate, he immediately goes into an exaggerated role play as the lord of the manor.Wealth, status and being loved are his obsessions. Even though it was a psychological thriller, it was also an exploration of grief and familial bonds— what would we do to protect our family and how much can we forgive? But when Deven sees the picture of the body she is certain that it’s not her sister. It can’t be. The body doesn’t reflect her cosmetic surgeries and her sister would never have done drugs. Something is amiss.Thank you to NetGalley, Kensington Books and Briana Cole herself for reaching out & giving me this ARC. So what are all of these twisted and creepy characters actually like in real life? Here’s a deep dive into the real lives of the cast of Behind Her Eyes on Netflix. Eve Hewson – Adele Ferguson Lust, jealousy, betrayal, and desperation to survive drive this dramatic tale that will appeal to fans of contemporary multicultural romance authors De’Nesha Diamond, Victoria Christopher Murray, and Shelly Ellis.” They are shown to live in northern areas of London, with a road sign outside David and Adele's saying they live in Islington in an N1 postcode area. Desperate to put the pieces together, Deven launches her own investigation. Soon, she finds herself tangled in a web of secrets and lies so twisted that it blurs the lines between fact and fiction. And between the sister she thought she knew and the one who seems to have many hidden, dangerous lives. But only Kennedy would have the answers to increasingly urgent questions. Just one possibility is clear: Kennedy isn’t missing. Maybe she just doesn’t want to be found. And maybe you can never truly know another person. Even your own sister.
