Dominique from Rochester, NyI liked the version done by Fleetwood mac. I fell in love with the version done by Eva Cassidy Tam from Baton Rouge, LaHow can anyone NOT love Eva Cassidy's angelic cover of Songbird. I would bet Christine McVie feels honored to have her song interpreted in such a magical way. That is what real music is meant to be. Shared and interpreted. An absolutely beautiful song written by a great singer-songwriter and covered quite powerfully by an incredible singer whose life was tragically cut short. Keira from Nsw, AustraliaBeautiful song. Both ladies sing it wonderfuly but listen to the version sung on "Glee", by Santana. It is amazing - by far the best. Fleetwood CadillacSongs evoke great memories as well. Eva’s version….not so much. Eva’s version has no meaning to her. Christie’s was written by her and sung from her heart, her feelings… big difference in my opinion but it is just my opinion. Anyone agree? Disagree? Let’s just be kind about it though ok? Nowadays, it’s very difficult, almost impossible, for new bird shops to get a licence. Government is very strict,” Jerry laments. “Unless you take over someone else’s bird shop. But those shops still need an AVA permit to import songbirds.”

Nocturnal bird song can be quite common in cities and urban areas and there are two trains of thought that explain this behaviour. How Birds Sing: the Amazing Syrinx songbirds a species from the oscine (ah-SEEN) group of passerine (PASS-er-een) birds, songbirds (including sparrows, thrushes, and warblers) have a specialized voice box called a syrinx that can produce complex sounds, songbirds must learn their songs rather than developing them instinctively have evolved a specialized two-sided vocal organ called the syrinx SEE-rinksthe bird voice box, located at the branch point between the trachea and bronchi and containing vibrating tissues called labia, in songbirds capable of making two sounds at once via independent muscle control that allows them to perform impressive feats of vocal gymnastics—including the unique ability to create two unrelated pitches at once.Bruce from Melbourne, AustraliaI agree with Clive. Good as Christine's version is, Eva's is decidedly better. However, why the comment about spelling and writing? And having done so, why spell to as too, and why split infinitives? People in glass houses shouldn't through stones. Jerry went on to explain that due to noise complaints by residents, some bird-singing corners were shut down by the government a few years ago. The global trade in wildlife is a highly lucrative industry that is driven by increasing demand in certain countries, with large volumes of wildlife and their derivatives being traded both internationally and domestically (Tingley et al. Reference Tingley, Harris, Hua, Wilcove and Yong2017, Symes et al. Reference Symes, McGrath, Rao and Carrasco2018, Di Minin et al. Reference Di Minin, Brooks, Toivonen, Butchart, Heikinheimo, Watson, Burgess, Challender, Goettsch, Jenkins and Moilanen2019). Birds are the most heavily traded taxa in the live animal industry (Bush et al. Reference Bush, Baker and Macdonald2014). Approximately one-third of global bird species are implicated in this trade (Nijman Reference Nijman2010, Ripple et al. Reference Ripple, Wolf, Newsome, Hoffmann, Wirsing and McCauley2017). While a portion of the global trade is legal and legitimate, much of the trade is illegal and underground in nature, preventing the efficient execution of enforcement and regulation measures (Haas and Ferreira Reference Haas and Ferreira2015, Ribeiro et al. Reference Ribeiro, Reino, Schindler, Strubbe, Vall-llosera, Araújo, Capinha, Carrete, Mazzoni, Monteiro and Moreira2019). This often results in overexploitation of wildlife leading to the loss of biodiversity and disruption of ecosystem processes (Broad et al. Reference Broad, Mulliken and Rose2003, Wasser et al. Reference Wasser, Poole, Lee, Lindsay, Dobson, Hart, Douglas-Hamilton, Wittemyer, Granli, Morgan and Gunn2010). Glossy midnight blue with orange chests and dangling white tail feathers up to a foot long, the shamas perch in their ornate wooden cages beside hand-painted ceramic food dishes. A few timid first chirps rise up in the air and are answered. Soon, warbles and chirrups spring up from all around.

I have been a fan of Christine's since I'd rather go blind in the late sixties and I love her version of Songbird too...... Animate the bird voice box and hear the impressive results. Animate the Syrinx> Animated Slides: Anatomy of Bird Song Slides Tony. from Glasgow., United KingdomThis may surprise some people but Fleetwood Mac intended to bring out a longer version than the one on Rumours. Sandy from Austin, TxI sing this song to my 3 year old daughter when I am trying to get her to sleep at night. She loves it, and so do I. After all, what mother wouldn't wish for love, happiness, and safety for their child. :-) Colin from London, United KingdomThis is a lovely song, written and performed beautifully by my fellow Brit, Christine McVie. However, I cried when I heard the version by Eva Cassidy, a wonderful voice who came to our notice too late.Wood Thrush https://academy.allaboutbirds.org/wp-content/uploads/WoodThrush_1NY39s.mp3 Further Learning Interactive: How Birds Sing The club at Kebun Baru is the largest of its kind in Singapore, an island city-state of nearly six million. Outside of the monthly competition days (currently on hold due to the government’s pandemic restrictions), dedicated hobbyists bring their birds to the club weekly or even daily to train; as social creatures, songbirds won’t sing unless others of the same species are nearby. Songbird owners seek shade for their pampered birds as the animals practice their singing by calling to each other. Ellie Clin After realising that he needed more time to care for his birds properly, Keshore left his full-time job as a ship surveyor to be a freelance renovator.

Songbird keeping became a medium for social interaction,” says Lee. “People could sit down with their close friends and talk about their birds, just as you and I today might bond over a common interest.” A songbird breeder, who prefers not to be named, shared that many Singaporeans bought their first songbird during the Circuit Breaker period in an effort to pass the time at home. Each bird has its own character, and that’s what makes the bird more interesting and beautiful to me,” says a young man named Yusof Muhammad, one of the songbird enthusiasts preparing for the competition. Muhammad says he only keeps white-rumped shamas because, “they have a lot of melody and a beautiful sound.”

How Birds Sing: the Amazing Syrinx

Surprisingly, the pandemic has unfurled renewed interest in songbird-keeping among many younger Singaporeans—just like keeping plants did for millennials. After several minutes of quiet pondering, they start scribbling on their clipboard. To the left of the sheltered area is a staircase, where a few senior birdmen huddle, calmly observing the scene below. One of them is Jerry, a 63-year-old birdman, who gives me a warm smile as our eyes meet. Highly urbanised Singapore, where the keeping of pet birds (songbirds in particular) is believed to have started in the 1950s and remains prevalent, is no exception (Layton Reference Layton1991, Lai Reference Lai2010, Ng Reference Ng2018a; Fig. 1b). There exists a highly active pet bird industry in Singapore, previously underestimated (Aloysius et al. Reference Aloysius, Yong, Lee and Jain2019), and comparable to markets in Indonesian cities. At least 14,000 birds were recorded in 28 local bird shops during a market survey conducted in 2015 (Eaton et al. Reference Eaton, Leupen and Krishnasamy2017). While studies have highlighted Singapore’s role as a key transit hub (Shepherd et al. Reference Shepherd, Stengel and Nijman2012, Poole and Shepherd Reference Poole and Shepherd2016, UNODC 2016, Aloysius et al. Reference Aloysius, Yong, Lee and Jain2019) and its fairly active domestic bird market (Eaton et al. Reference Eaton, Leupen and Krishnasamy2017), research that focuses on the consumers is sparse.

Until you make a concerted effort to learn them, bird songs mostly go in one ear and right out the other. Since humans are such visual creatures, many people find that visualizations are the key to recognizing and remembering the unique voices of birds. Fortunately, there are tools that can visualize the properties of a sound—all you need to know is a little about how sound is produced. Sound is a pressure wave A music video to accompany the release of "Keep Singing" was first released onto YouTube on 6 April 2016 at a total length of three minutes and thirty-eight seconds.

There are still local songbird lovers here in Singapore who prefer keeping the wild-caught birds. They think because they’re from the wild, the song comes more naturally. But I disagree,” he says. “With any species from the wild, you don’t know whether the bloodline is good, and you don’t know whether it’s going to perform well in the arena.” year-old birdman, Jerry, concurred with Keshore’s assessment that there are safe spaces for songbird owners. Some estates, he shares, are not as forbearing towards the bird calls. Araya-Salas, M. , Wright, T. (2013) Open-ended song learning in a hummingbird. Biology Letters, 9: 20130625. We can also draw upon lessons learned from previous successful behaviour change campaigns, such as those to reduce Singapore shark’s fin consumption (WWF 2016), and ivory trade (Ng Reference Ng2018b) in which biodiversity awareness-raising campaigns have been observed to have positive impacts on raising awareness of the public (Chua et al. Reference Chua, Tan and Carrasco2021). He explained that keeping songbirds in their cages does not fulfil the five principles of animal welfare that are applied to animals in captivity: freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury and disease, freedom from fear and distress, and freedom to express normal behaviour.
