Description

The school bully intimidates and plays mean tricks on people, like filling their backpacks with gross food. Through their sensitivity, curiosity, ingenuity, bravery and innocent niceness, they make a massive impact on Ahmet’s life, friends, class, school, community and wider world. I remember asking her, when we were a little older, if she was happy living in the states, where there was no war.

Sometimes I think everyone likes to believe a lie even when they know it’s a lie because it’s more exciting than the truth. Khan’s classroom, but on the third Tuesday of the school year a new kid fills it: nine-year-old Ahmet, a Syrian refugee. It is honest about characters being fearful about people they do not know and situations they do not understand. The new boy is Ahmet, a Syrian refugee who, separated from his family, has somehow got to Britain, ending up in social services care. I presumed this book wouldn't be suitable for young children but actually it would be an excellent way of tackling discussion around the refugee crisis.

You may also want to download our Embrace Our Differences PowerPoint to provoke discussion with your KS2 children. This Ks2 resource focuses on Ahmet and allows your class to delve deeper into the character and the reactions and actions of other characters. The kids in the classroom might be intrigued by the identity of the new boy, but readers will not be so slow.

It is such a nice and heartwarming story told from a perspective of 9 and 3/4 year old girl talking about very important issues of today. This book tackles many issues in a light and easy way including diversity, curiosity, bullying in school, built-in rules of schools and friendship. Her titles include The Boy at the Back of the Class, The Star Outside My Window, The Night Bus Hero, and The Lion Above the Door. Reading this book with the children and discussing it with them have made the whole book 10 times better. Kid power is harnessed in The Boy at the Back of the Class , and in the end, the kindness of youngsters wins the day.The story had a full arc there was that initial intrigue and as that sort of dies down and you grasp the context of all the characters then there’s a build up of an adventure and the story has a second wind. Alexa, who is narrating, has some funny observations, and is curious about Ahmet, and wants to help him, to the point of trying to find a treat that he used to have in his homeland. But after learning that Ahmet fled a Very Real War and was separated from his family along the way, a determined group of his classmates bands together to concoct the Greatest Idea in the World–a magnificent plan to reunite Ahmet with his loved ones. As they learn more about him – that he is a Kurdish refugee from Syria and that he was separated from his family en route to Britain – their concern for him grows.

He never talks and never smiles and doesn’t like sweets – not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite! It talks about refugees, their struggles and their lives, in such a way which can be easily understood by kids. Ten-year-old Aniyah and her little brother Noah find themselves living in foster care after the sudden disappearance of their mum. When the kids learn that Ahmet has been separated from his family, his new friends decide to take matters in their own hands and make a plan that ends up shaking up much more than the status quo on the playground. One day the chair in the back of the class is filled by a boy, Ahmet, and our MC decides to become friends.

So the main character (“I”) stuck his hand out to give one of the guards their letter when they were changing guards -- which was really brave. Onjali is the founder of Making Herstory, an organisation that mobilises men, women, and children from all walks of life to pro-actively deal with the abuse and trafficking of women and girls in the UK and beyond. Unfortunately I have had to remove my rating for this book as I cannot continue to support a transphobic and ableist author: https://twitter.

The friends find out that the gates are closing and that no one else will be allowed into the country. Her debut book, The Boy at the Back of the Class, was met with critical acclaim whose awards include the 2019 Blue Peter Book Award and Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.
