Boogie - flatulent, streetwise yet still lovable; Mark Wallington -the natural successor to Jerome K Jerome. The first story is a light-hearted travel tale of the author's walk round the Devon/Cornwall coastline, with an introduction to the inimitable Boogie, both right up my street. Along comes Boogie, his mate's dog, who is used to London, is 100% Mongrol and prefers concrete to grass.

Three decades later, I'm chortling over this book at a second-hand book stall and the nice lady in charge lets me have it for free. Gear talk: Pad-Pal, the world’s smallest and lightest electric pad inflator is getting smaller and lighter! Having visited Cornwall last year, I looked forward to this revisit, but I'm afraid I tired off it gradually.Although no great heights are reached, there is constant downhill and uphill along steep clifftop paths which frequently descend down to sea level. Their titanium Siphon has its faults, but these are mostly balanced out by simplicity, small size, light weight, robustness and performance. In 500 MILE WALKIES Mark and Boogie tackle Britains longest coastal footpath - from Somerset to Devon, from Cornwall to Dorset.

I laughed out loud, perhaps because I've walked a long distance trail, or perhaps because I walk with a dog, or perhaps, this fella just has a humorous way of seeing things. It is said if you do the entire path, the total height climbed is four times the height of Everest, yet it is very accessible and there are plenty of characterful pubs close to the path at which to enjoy a well earned meal and a drink. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Three Points of the Compass sets out on a winter wander from London to Birmingham along the Grand Union Canal. He's supposed to be accompnnied by Jennifer, his on-off girlfriend, but when she fails to turn up, he takes his dog, Boogie - well, more that he can't find anywhere to have him for the duration. Nevertheless, it is a very entertaining read, and probably the book I have read more often than any other.

Mile Walkies' tells of how the author decided to walk from Minehead to Poole, following the coast line through Devon, Cornwell and Dorset. Three Points of the Compass is not a particularly doggy type chap, nor is this book particularly well written. It gets a bit boring to hear yet again how awful Boogie is but there is also something charming about the inner journey the author travels.
