Description

The book expecting me to feel bad for Juliet after Lainie cheated on her, even though Juliet was fully intending to cheat on Lainie with the new girl she met at the library. From the beginning with a richly illustrated dinner scene where Juliet comes out, to her Miami trip where she visits her cousin and aunt, we see how much her family means to her. Touch the wobbling blobs of blood and tissue that escape and land intact on your favorite period panties.

Like those archaic views are actually the same as understanding gender and the implications it decrees.Harlowe is racist, transphobic, man-hating and the most stereotypical "feminist" ever - but not actual feminist, the type of feminist most people think of and most people HATE. This graphic novel talks about casual racism, it talks about how reverse racism doesn't exist, it's about how white people will so often overstep and speak over people of colour when they are trying to help. We see that the relationship that Juliet is in in the beginning of the story does not seem very healthy and it shows just how important communication is in a relationship. However, I read the first few pages and was kinda hooked by the voice of Juliet, a 19-year-old Latina, living in the Bronx. But in the book it was already a lot of topics that were discussed or even just introduced and not discussed in detail.

Complementing the excellent storyline of finding wonderfully strong friendships through empathy, relatability, and shared identities, are other themes highlighting the importance of communication in a deteriorating relationship and of discovering new feelings for someone.A review in the Los Angeles Times Book Review notes it became an "instant classic" after its debut from a small publisher. I loved the art, the warm colors, and best of all, the artist’s appreciation for what women’s bodies actually look like. I love how I had to double-check myself on my thoughts because I'm a white woman, and when I read a book written by an author of color, I want to make sure I don't think or judge before I listen. While I adored the conversation on queerness and on being QBIPOC, and how different that experience is from a white queer person's experience, I found the plot rather meandering and boring. Her brother is one of my favorite characters because the love between them just shone through and reminded me of my own brother.

There are so many hurdles and invisible barriers to being included, and Juliet stumbles into several of them.During this internship she gets introduced to a super diverse group of queer people and finds a queer space to belong for the first time. This book is filled to the brim with strong, outspoken and beautiful queer, poc women and it truly made my heart sing. I attempted to brush it off to differences in lifestyle (The whole “Let’s have a ceremony for your period” “I’m honored you’d bleed out of your vagina in my household” is NOT my thing, but I recognize that is how other people live their lives and that’s fine!
