Description

A lot of modern-day monitors come to the table boasting at least a 5ms response time, however, gaming monitors can go much lower. Several monitors in this guide have response times of well below that and for good reason. Phillips 32 32M1N5800A (4k144), LG 32" (4K60) | Gigabyte G32QC (2k165) | Phillips 328m6fjrmb (2K144) Although the LG UltraWide 38WN95C isn’t a gaming monitor per se, it has all the necessary credentials, including a 144Hz refresh rate, a 1ms response time and support for both AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync. It’s a 38in curved ultrawide monitor with a high resolution and a price tag to match, but that’s okay: this monitor earns its keep. With Thunderbolt USB-C support, a two-port USB-A hub and a versatile stand with height adjustment and swivel, there’s very little the 38WN95C can’t do.

Again, I haven't received my new laptop yet so I can't speak to the AMD FreeSync capabilities on this monitor or how the response time feels when PC gaming. Key specs – Screen size: 38in; Resolution: 3,840 x 1,600; Screen technology: IPS; Refresh rate: 144Hz; Response time: 1ms G2G; Curvature: 2300R; Video inputs: 1 x DP, 2 x HDMI, 1 x Thunderbolt USB-C; Other ports: 2 x USB-A, 1 x 3.5mm Less Screen Tearing: Screen tearing is caused by a difference in refresh rate and frame rate. Your PCs graphics card dictates the frame rate. When this exceeds the monitor's refresh rate, screen tearing can occur. This is when half frames appear on the same screen momentarily. Even though they last less than a second, it is a huge distraction, especially for gamers. Testing the products we recommend is a huge part of the overall selection process in our best of guides. It’s a way to make sure what we recommend is, without a doubt, the best option in its specific category. To be sure a product is “the best,” it must show excellent performance in our tests, and display better qualities and features than the competition it faces. This monitor features G-Sync and AMD’s FreeSync premium variable refresh rate as well, ridding users of any annoying screen artifacts like screen-tear. An anti-glare coating has been used for this monitor as well, providing good daylight viewing conditions. A 16:9 aspect ratio also completes this monitor’s design. I have a monitor with build in FPS counter (monitor side) and I use Afterburner's FPS counter (GPU side of things). They give different results. My monitor is 60hz. When the GPU delivers 60 fps and monitor reads also says 60hz, game fluidiy is so so.

In fact, it wasn’t that long ago when we had to be content with a 60Hz refresh rate just to experience that crisp 4K resolution, or settle for 1440p just to get a fast refresh rate without blowing our budget. These days, you can have the best of both worlds – a high-resolution 4K monitor that will make movies more immersive, and a fast refresh rate monitor that will make those fast-paced games even smoother. LG has equipped the 48GQ900-B with a 120Hz refresh rateand HDMI 2.1 support, allowing the display to take full advantage of next-gen console performance. Both the Xbox Series X and PS5will be able to run 4K gameplay @ 120Hz on this monitor. VRR technology is on offer here as well, great news considering Sony’s latest announcement regarding PlayStation 5 and VRR. It even has AMD FreeSync built in and is G-Sync compatible for use with your gaming PC as well. Connectivity: Additional ports beyond the usual HDMI/DP/3.5mm are useful if you have a lot of wired peripherals. Gaming PCs are usually well-equipped in this regard which makes connectivity a secondary concern for most PC gamers. If you’re on a laptop, however, you may want to consider spending extra on a monitor with a USB-A hub or even USB-C connectivity. gaming requires a high-end graphics card. If you're not using a GeForce RTX 4090 or Radeon RX 7900 XTX, you'll want at least a GeForce RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 6900 XT to game at high-quality settings. Visit our Graphics Card Buying Guidefor help.

So, the main thing to take away from this is, graphical performance is absolutely essential when using a 144Hz monitor – and even more so in 4K. One of the main reasons why OLED monitors are so expensive is that they are not mass produced in the same way as standard monitors. As they are less produced, these monitors tend to hold their value. Key specs – Screen size: 27in; Resolution: 2,560 x 1,440; Screen technology: VA; Refresh rate: 165Hz; Response time: 1ms; Video inputs: 2 x HDMI 2, 1 x DisplayPort 1.4; Other ports: 2 x USB-A 3.0, 1 x USB-B 3.0, 1 x 3.5mm

Let me reformulate my doubt: does your GPU have more workload when you change from 60hz to 120hz? Is there extra "work" to be done by the GPU, or is the whole process done inside the monitor, so not affecting the GPU performance? It’s also supremely practical, with a two-port USB-A hub joining that remarkable stand to strengthen this monitor’s productivity credentials. Only a USB-C port would have sweetened the deal.

I Swapped the CEO's Assistant For a Day!

If it wasn’t obvious, OLED monitors are much more expensive than LED alternatives. Even the most expensive 4K 144Hz gaming monitors don’t land a glove on the price of OLED alternatives. Part of that is due to the fact that OLED is still in its early stages. Once the technology becomes more widespread, chances are the costs will reduce exponentially. Only buy a 4K monitor if you have a top-of-the-line gaming PC or next-gen console, or you’ll be wasting the 144Hz refresh rate. After that I simply gave up on the monitor (it was fine on my old 60 Hz monitor after all, so the problem should be the monitor... right?), RMA'd it and bought another one.
