Music performance is similarly accomplished with a big, clean and detailed performance. The presentation of Elbow’s Some Riot edges towards ever so slightly bright in Music mode, but the Smart 9 refrains from harsh or shrill tones. I know with Forums you can get a sense that this issue is a frequent occurance because that is why we have posted comments, but I wonder how many are affected by this issue, 1 in 10, 1 in 1000, 1 in 50,000? - I get slightly more worried when I hear someone has the same issue twice - unusually for Lightning to strike twice unless the obvious is true and there is a Quality issue. In regards to control you can use the supplied remote to control things such as Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble and whichever input you want to be on, but it also has the ability for learning remote – meaning if you have an existing TV remote you can program it to control the DM60 in a few minutes.

Bluetooth aptX lets you stream music from any smartphone or tablet. There’s still no sign of HDMI inputs, but we don’t feel that’s a huge miss as the optical input works perfectly well. Another option not officially supported by Sonos, is to connect all your devices via their optical output to an optical switch. This can be advantageous since some TVs don’t pass through exactly what they are sent. For example they may downsample 5.1 Dolby Digital to stereo. If you only have a Sky box connected to your TV, I’d connect directly from the Sky box to the Playbar to ensure any 5.1 content is played correctly. I figured it might be something to do with HD audio but I am surprised that you can't just connect up a bluray player (as per Canton's own instructions) and it just work - I hooked up a Samsung bluray player last night and it had the same issue (unless I set the output to PCM).Resist the urge to push the bass level up to 3 and you’ll enjoy seamless, non-directional bass that doesn’t sound boomy. Its natural agility and seamless integration keeps your eyes on the action, not the bass controls. The prospect of multi-room sounds enticing, but in truth it’s restricted to Canton’s own Smart series. It can be built up over time with the addition of subwoofers, active speakers and even an AV wireless amplifier that supports Dolby Atmos from Canton’s Smart series. What does this mean? When I get a bluray film that allows me to manually select standard Dolby Digital 5.1 from the audio options (not the bluray player options but the actual movie menu options) it works fine and sound is reproduced. What’s more, although I’m not sure about Canton’s quoted 60W output, the output is very impressive before even considering its size. It’s not as loud as the Sonos Play:1 but significantly louder than say the Braven 705. And I couldn’t hear much distortion even approaching full volume. The 6 driver DM55 is the smallest of a range of soundbases from Canton, an established and well respected German brand. The 55 stands for 55cm (width). They also do a DM75 (8 drivers ) and DM100 (10 drivers) at 75cm and 100cm wide respectively with higher specs.

Bluetooth pairing is a simple affair, and would be even easier with a NFC device (many Android and Windows phones). You need to hold the Bluetooth button down until you hear “ Bluetooth Pairing“. With a NFC enabled device, you can then just tap it on the speaker to pair. Otherwise go to Bluetooth settings on your smartphone or tablet and select the speaker. The speaker then gives a reassuring “ Connected” voice prompt. It remembers the connection from then on, and will save up to five paired devices. Additionally, two devices can be connected at the same time – the speaker will pay audio from whatever device you’re using at that time. Obviously none of this is an issue if using the DM50 in stereo mode, which (as the What Hi-fi review and others have stated) may be preferred anyway. Canton are a well regarded German HiFi brand which have achieved a number of awards for their TV sound bases like the DM55. The diminutive Musicbox XS is their first entry into the portable Bluetooth speaker market and has just been released in the UK.First things first, if you’ve ever seen a DM50 or DM55 then you’ve seen the DM60, the design is pretty much identical. However, having said that it isn’t a bad thing as the Cantons have always had a sleek and minimalist look to them that transcends most furnishing styles making it practically perfect for all, but the most art deco living rooms. If you’ve never seen any of those products, then you’ll be excited to see a small rectangular plinth with a glass top, a small LED screen and a small Canton logo on the front. I saw the speaker at a trade show in September and was impressed – although it’s always difficult to judge in a noisy environment. Canton are entering a busy field of portable Bluetooth speakers, at many different price points. Overview Canton Musicbox XS The Canton Digital Movie 55 is a 2.1-channel soundbar capable of delivering powerful audio output with its 200W RMS rated power. It features advanced audio decoders such as DTS TruSurround and Dolby Digital, which enhance the audio quality for an immersive viewing experience. The included remote is well put together, and a little larger than you’d usually see at this level. It provides the usual volume and input controls, as well as buttons for Bluetooth pairing, a ‘Play Mode’ (a choice of surround sound or stereo) and EQ settings. Holding the latter two down will open up larger menus that provide access to some of the soundbar’s more in-depth features, which I’ll discuss in the next section.

As I said earlier, running through the TV via the optical I did notice a drop in dialogue centreing performance compared to a direct connect from the bluray player - this could be down to the fact that the Canton is only receiving a stereo signal from the optical (due to the TV's limitations). That’s not to say the low end is boomy or out of control, however; there’s just plenty of it. It won’t go as deep or sound as defined as the bass you’d get from a separate sub, of course – but it remains capable of a pretty impressive rumble for an all-in-one soundbar of its size. It doesn’t sound pushed either, thanks to good-quality drivers; it projected well into my medium-sized living room. I find the volume needs to be up at around 75 or so (out of 100) for regular TV watching, however, and at 90 for films. As such, there isn’t a whole lot of room to spare if your ears can take more – but at least the volume is usable all the way up to the maximum. If you’re after a soundbase that both looks good and performs brilliantly, this Canton DM55 is definitely one you need to audition. As well as making your TV sound great, the Canton DM 55 also offers easy Bluetooth music streaming. Using the high quality apt-X Bluetooth codec, you can stream music from your smartphone, tablet or Bluetooth-equipped laptop or desktop computer. Stream your music library or use a music streaming service such as Spotify and enjoy a massive range of music in Canton quality. For music, the soundbase supports Bluetooth streaming via aptX. There’s a very simple setup procedure to connect your device via Bluetooth. Bluetooth has less range than WiFi so your phone or tablet will need to be with 10-15m of the DM55. Comparison TV Sound Connections on the DM55 remain the same as before: you get two digital inputs (optical and coaxial), a pair of RCA analogue inputs, and a subwoofer output. I think I've worked out the issue - the Canton will happily receive a Dolby Digital 5.1 signal which is why the odd bluray film plays fine, and is also why those that dont play but do have a 5.1 in the audio options, will end up playing fine.
