Description

Our Elephant Family are a large herd, who live in Kenya’s Amboseli Park, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. They are monitored by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project – the longest-running project of its kind in Africa. By adopting the Elephant Family, you will help to fund this vital project, as well as supporting Born Free’s campaigning to end the keeping of elephants in captivity, campaigning to end trophy hunting and the ivory trade, and work with elephants in other parts of Kenya. And then there’s seed dispersal. When elephants eat seed-bearing plants and fruits, the seeds often re-emerge undigested. It’s the way a lot of plants spread. And elephants can eat big seeds that small animals can’t. If you can’t decide which of our adorable animals you want to adopt, you may be interested in becoming a Born Free supporter by setting up a monthly donation. The money we receive from our regular donations is unrestricted, and allows us to support the projects that need it the most. Elephants play an essential role in their environment. They're ‘landscape architects’ – for instance as they move around and feed, they create clearings in wooded areas, which lets new plants grow and forests regenerate naturally.

Local people depend on natural resources found in elephant habitats, for example for food, fuel and income. As one of Africa’s wildlife ‘big five’, elephants are popular with tourists, which can be an important source of income for communities. Choosing to pay by Direct Debit helps your money go further; it helps our long-term planning and keeps our administration costs down. Your name displayed at the animal exhibit (name will be displayed at the beginning of the following month and will be displayed for 12 months) Adopting an elephant helps to support Born Free’s work in preventing elephants’ mistreatment and endangerment. We work to stop elephants from being poached and killed for their ivory, as well as support ranger patrols that monitor and protect the elephants in the wild, and work with local communities to reduce conflict between people and elephants. Their ivory tusks help with digging, stripping bark from trees and fighting. Not all male Asian elephants have tusks! But both males and females can have tushes, which are incisor teeth that grow to just below the bottom lip.Without elephants, the natural structure and functioning of their landscapes would be very different, which would have impacts on the other wildlife and the people who share that space. They need to eat a lot and can spend two thirds of a day feeding. They eat grasses, tree bark, roots, leaves and the like.
