[15] See also [ edit ]We launched an extensive lion conservation project in Meru National Park in Kenya, the stunning landscape where Elsa the lioness was returned to the wild. Living in South Africa, I have always been awed by the nature of wild animals. Although I am not the biggest fan of non-fiction, books about animals always fascinate me. Ray, Rachel (7 January 2011). On 3 January 1980, in Shaba National Reserve in Kenya, Joy Adamson's body was discovered by her assistant, Pieter Mawson. Can I call this a leobiography? I think it is technically an autobiography, however it doesn't feel right to say so, since we learn very little about Joy and her husband. Canby, Vincent (23 June 1966). "The Screen: Honesty and Humor Make 'Born Free' a Fresh and Moving Film: Biography of Lion Has Documentary Flavor". The New York Times . Retrieved 18 December 2012.We helped the Kenya Wildlife Service move 29 threatened elephants from Shimba Hills to Tsavo East National Park. This is one of the best animal stories of all time. Why? Because it isn't just about a lion named Elsa, it is about a companion, a friend and a loving creature who shared in the lives of Joy and George Adamson when they lived in Kenya. Originally penned in 1960, it is the touching tale of how they raised an orphaned lion cub named Elsa and she grew to be their nearest and dearest friend - she was family. I have rarely read a book so heartwarming. Elsa was really very magical and unique, and after reading this book, having a lion around suddenly begins to sound much more enjoyable than a dog. The next book is Living Free Adamson repeatedly visits the area where Elsa has been released, there are various reunions, Elsa becomes pregnant, gets into fights (you know your typical teenaged mother from a broken home story), gives birth, causes Adamson some panic as lions (as do some other mammals) can retract their teats so they can go about their business as needed and then at leisure lower them to nurse their young, eventually Elsa allows Adamson et al to make acquaintance with her cubs. Adamson receives fan mail from readers of Born Free Their publisher comes out from Britain and is introduced to Elsa, at which point Adamson does not mention raising the question of her royalties but maybe I'm just nastier than her imagining that discussions over the size of an advance would go better when an adult lioness has her head on the publishers knee, this part is somewhat less sweet. With our support, a small group of cheetah were successfully relocated from South Africa to Malawi’s Liwonde National Park, 20 years after local extinction.

One of the lions in the film was played by a former mascot of the Scots Guards, who had to leave him behind when they left Kenya. [4] The writing was a bit stilted at times, and generally it was a bit hard to read. Not that I had any expectations of it being an easy read. The book was highly informative.

George Adamson served as chief technical advisor on the film and discusses his involvement in his first autobiography, Bwana Game (UK title, 1968), known in the US as A Lifetime with Lions. [3] According to Ben Mankiewicz, who introduces the film on Turner Classic Movies, the production unit mainly used wild lions. [ citation needed] Adamson's writing flows like a conversation between friends. The adventures with Elsa touch you in a very special way that true stories usually do. I had moments of laughter and smiles as well as tears. I had read about Joy and George in previous books I had read - A Lion Called Christian and Born Wild, so I felt it necessary to read about Joy's own experiences. My Pride and Joy. (Autobiography). Our support for Animals Asia began, with the aim of stopping exploitation of moon bears, cruelly milked for their bile, and providing care for rescued bears in sanctuaries in China and Vietnam. We sponsored Mali Elephant Project in West Africa, protecting one of only two populations of rare desert elephants. Our huge ivory trade campaign, including a petition of 600,000 signatures, contributed to CITES imposing an international commercial ivory trade ban. Joy Adamson was cremated and her ashes were buried in Elsa the Lioness's grave in Meru National Park in Meru, Kenya. [14] In October, we launched ‘Saving Meru’s Giants’, our ambitious programme to protect elephants and giraffes of Meru, including the deployment of our de-snaring Twiga Team. Some years later, Joy and George soon have to travel to Kiunga as George has been told by his boss, John Kendall (Geoffrey Keen) about a lion who is killing goats in a local village. George successfully manages to kill the lion and he and Joy are able to share a special holiday with Elsa, where they introduce her to the Indian Ocean. On returning to the Northern Province, the Adamsons learn that Elsa has caused a massive elephant stampede. Kendall states that the Adamsons can no longer keep Elsa and must find a zoo to take her in. However, Joy instead wishes to teach Elsa how to survive in the wild, which Kendall reluctantly gives her and George three months to do.
