Description

The book challenges stereotypes about both homeless people and bullies, questioning the definition of a hero and whether people really can change? Raúf’s story really brings it alive and makes it human, something you can touch rather than something that’s hidden in the shadows. I have to admit that this does make him a slightly difficult character to cheer on though, at least in the beginning! This novel sees the protagonist blame a homeless man Thomas for stealing public statues around London, and Thomas soon becomes the most wanted homeless man in London.

This is the story about how four classmates have a massive impact on the life of Ahmet, a boy that comes to their school as a refugee from Syria. And all the while, events inform reader and Hector of what it is like to live rough, to live where you aren't wanted, to feel the consequences of another person's cruel prank. My kids and I listened to the audiobook on our holiday road trip and loved the idea of the narrative perspective coming from the antihero- the school bully. In her spare time, she delivers emergency aid convoys for refugee families surviving in Calais and Dunkirk, and supports interfaith projects. The repercussions draw Hector out of his selfish world: To fix the mess he has created, he needs the begrudging help of Mei-Li, his teacher’s-pet classmate. Would open up lots of conversation around how we treat others, stereotypes and just general kindness if shared with a class. I find I don’t enjoy books with main characters who are all “good” or all “bad”; I am bored equally by both extremes.

Readers will feel motivated to see the best in others and hopeful that bad things can be overcome with effort. I loved going on the journey with Hector and seeing him learn about homeless people and how they aren't bad like he thinks they are at the beginning - the friendship that blossoms between Thomas and Hector is truly beautiful.

But because Hector is telling the story we soon realise that he is dealing with troubles of his own, and as we know, most bullies are troubled humans.
