These beginning sound codes have been such a hit in the seasonal spelling activities that I knew I had to include them in this set, too. Use the computer keyboard to practice typing your spelling words. Can you put your fingers on the correct keys? 26. STAMPING SPELLING WORDS Wow! What an exhaustive list! With all of these awesome spelling games and activities, there will never be a dull spelling moment again, right?! 😉 For children who are really struggling with their spellings, modern technology can work wonders. Apps and games on the keyboard are fun and interactive, but keep in mind that a lot of keypads use capital letters, which won’t always help a child that can’t easily interchange the two. Muscle memory Treat Them As Individuals

How many spelling words can your students include in a story? Write a short story that makes sense and illustrate it. 25. KEYBOARD WORDS Keep things varied. Learning spelling patterns and how to spell words can become repetitive, so mix up the activities that you do. Twinkl have lots of spelling warm-up resources to help with this! Or, you could try our handy Planner Tool. Drag all the resources you want your students to practise and then give them the access pin, so they can do the exercises even without a Twinkl account. Of course, you don't have to go with what we recommend. The choice is yours but if you're experiencing decision fatigue, why not start with something simple like our High Frequency Words Interactive Word Search - a fun interactive game that's sure to be a hit! Recommended Spelling Activities and Spelling Games (KS2):Spelling is one of those subjects we dread to teach, and making spelling fun is an ongoing battle. It is so hard to make learning spellings fun, and the truth of the matter is, the only real way to learn English spellings is by writing the word out lots and lots of times. In fact, studies show that children need to write out a word in their independent work about 10-15 times before they learn it’s spelling off by heart. Some children might need less, but some children will need more – a lot more. The student at the front of line 1 will select a paper slip from the bowl and read the word out loud. Commonly Misspelt Words Interactive Word Search - Give your students an edge by practising commonly misspelt words with them. This is another interactive game that will surely attract and hold their attention. Put movement into learning words. Have your child clap for each letter or take a step for each letter as they spell the word out loud. This will help to reinforce the correct sequence of letters, as well as develop full recall for the word.

Use mnemonics to assist their memorising ability. Some words don't follow particular spelling patterns (or they break them) and so they have to be memorised. Make it fun by using mnemonics! You’ll need to arrange the students in a circle or a line, depending on how much space you have in your classroom. Students write each spelling word on the spiral. They keep going until they reach the middle. 17. SPELLING WORD SYLLABLES

Create two ‘boards’ with 6 numbers on them. You can make them pretty! Then you take turns to roll the dice and give each other a spelling. If you get the spelling right you get a counter on that number. The person with counters on all numbers is the winner. Shop Bought Spelling Games

How to learn spellings in the KS1 classroom

Use this spelling worksheet generator to create your own spelling practice worksheets. If your child’s teacher has provided spelling words for your child, you can simply type those words into the word box and select which worksheet you would like to create. The word lists are made by spelling rules and include several words that follow that rule. Spelling lists do not go by grade level until your child has mastered all of the spelling rules. Some children will master the spelling rules sooner than others, so until then, use the spelling assessment to see which rules your child needs to work on and select from the pre-made lists. You should select which words on the list fit your child’s needs and delete the others – they are only there for ideas. I’m sharing 12 FREE, NO PREP, printable and digital Spelling Activities for Kindergarten, first and second grade students! These activities provide meaningful and engaging spelling practice and are perfect for any word work literacy center. I also offer details about my Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource that offers weekly word lists, practice activities, parent letters, assessments and MORE for k-3!
