The next thing to consider is the temperature range in which the device can effectively operate. Opting for the right range will help to prevent the device from sending wrong signals should the weather in your area change and provide accurate operation. If you live in a moderate climate with cold winters and hot summers, the best decision would be to opt for an adjustable model, allowing for changing/varying this range depending on the weather conditions. Since 2002, Hispec has been at the forefront of delivering top-notch fire safety products and innovative lighting solutions to the UK wholesale market. Our diverse product streams cover Fire & CO alarms, Emergency Lightingand an extensive range of lighting products. Smoke alarms are the most common devices found in homes. They are self-contained appliances, so when smoke is detected, they have an internal alarm which will sound. The Hispec RF Pro range is a series of smoke and heat alarms that are fitted with a 10 year sealed longlife lithium battery. The radio-frequency interlinking allows for up 20 smoke and heat alarms, in the same series, to be included all in one system. If one of the alarms was to activate in another part of the property, it would activate the rest of the system to alert you to the fire. The combined test and hush button allows for easy weekly alarm testing and silencing of any nuisance alarms. In addition to the aforementioned sensors, smoke detectors usually come fitted with a sound alarm, which goes off when smoke's being detected, and light indicators. Some models may also include additional motion, occupancy, humidity sensors, expanding the functionality of the device and making it more versatile. Temperature Range and Power Source

From the Hispec RF Pro range, this specially designed kit for home protection includes two optical smoke alarms and one heat alarm. Powered by sealed lithium batteries, these alarms communicate wirelessly via radio-frequency to give you the earliest possible warning to a fire in your home. At any time, this system can be expanded to suit your property up to a total of 20 devices; this includes smoke and heat alarms from the same range and a wireless control unit. All of the alarms in the kit come with a 5 year manufacturer's warranty for additional peace of mind.Officially seen as the World’s smallest smoke alarm at just 4cm in diameter, this Cavius is not just a novelty. If you need a bit of a visual guidance, it is basically the size of a golf ball. Despite its size, it works just as well as its larger rivals. The health effects of CO depend on the concentration and length of exposure (carbon monoxide concentration is measured in parts per million). According to respected CO alarm manufacturer Kidde, “a carbon monoxide detector is a time-weighted alarm that measures the buildup of carbon monoxide in a house.

The Nest Protect is very easy to set up: simply remove the battery tab, launch the app, log in to your Wi-Fi, give it a name (kitchen, lounge and so on) and mount it in a suitably elevated place on a wall. The Nest Protect passed our sealed incense test with flying colours: the smoke alarm went off first, followed by the CO alarm five minutes later; according to the app, the CO level was 414ppm and increasing. We can’t think of a better CO currently alarm on the market, particularly as it also detects smoke. It features an alarm which sounds at 85 dB(A) from 3 metres away, which is piercing enough to wake you up from a deep slumber. If it sounds a false alarm, a ten minute hush button will give your ears a rest. This button can also be used to manually test the alarm, just in case you haven’t heard it in a while and want to make sure everything is okay. The X-Sense smoke detector is a premium-quality product that ensures effective, long-lasting protection. Equipped with a 3V 1500 mAh lithium battery, the unit consumes very little power and can uninterruptedly work for 10 years. Plus, it boasts a wide operating range, capable of detecting smoke within the space of up to 20-40 sq. metres. Should something go wrong, the detector will start the loud 85 dB buzzer and the red LED light as a warning. No matter if you’re asleep or busy with noisy repairs, the ear-piercing sound will definitely get through. This is invaluable in case of real fire, when you have to leave the premises as soon as possible. Note that the warning can only be disabled by normalising the smoke level or releasing the test button. All of these concentrations are bad enough when you’re awake and realise that something isn’t quite right – especially if others are feeling a similar effect – but if you’re asleep, you may wake up with a severe headache and nausea and be incapable of even crawling for fresh air. Worse, you might not even wake up at all. Why should I be concerned? But most will still notify your phone if they detect something, and can easily communicate with others in the collection. Many will also give you voice notes, either telling you out loud what they have detected or giving instructions. When the battery is low, it starts a 30 day long low battery indicator. A short acoustic beep will sound when the voltage is below 2.85V. This gives you plenty of time to act, without leaving you in the dark at the last minute meaning you have to rush out to the shops immediately. It also leaves enough power in the battery for four minutes of alarm, which should be enough to get everybody out of the house. Ionisation alarms ionise the air between two electrodes. These are positively and negatively charged, creating a small current inside the chamber.

Don’t kid around with your smoke alarm. The Kidde by Safelincs is a reliable and user-centric system that will save you space and costs. Northern Ireland has Technical BookletE: 2012 which has similar legislation as the building regulations BS 5839. It requires that all households should have at least: Using dual detection technology, photoelectric smoke and differential heat sensors, this Eve Smoke adds an extra layer of safety to your home. It is nowlaw in Northern Ireland to fit a Carbon Monoxide alarm near any appliancethat burns any type of fuel (gas, wood, oil or coal) except for a cooker. Typical installations include near the boiler and/or gas fireplace/multi-fuel burner.Pros: Can suit dustier areas, such as lofts, the area near your bathroom or rooms where people smoke. This one has Thermoptek technology, which essentially means it can detect both smouldering slow fires and a rapid rise in temperature, which signals a fast fire. A Carbon monoxide alarm detector where there is a carbon-fuelled appliance such as boilers, fires (including open fires), heaters and stoves or a flue. Pros: Good for bedrooms, landings and hallways, and near to kitchens as they aren’t as prone to false alarms from cooking. Carbon monoxide sensors have a finite lifespan of between five and seven years, although a few manufacturers now claim that their sensors will last a full ten years. Generally speaking, it’s worth playing it safe and replacing your alarm a year or two before its life is supposed to run out. Tests in the US have shown that alarms over eight years old can fail to detect CO at levels of above 400ppm.

The latter are pricier when you buy for the first time, but you won't have to factor in the expense of replacement battery costs. For a person to begin feeling the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning, they would need to be exposed to a carbon monoxide level of 50 parts per million (ppm) for eight hours. An alarm’s response time will vary depending on the level of carbon monoxide in the air. For example, an alarm will sound after three and a half hours of continuous exposure at a level of 50ppm, yet will sound after eight minutes of continuous exposure at a level of 400ppm.” When dangerous levels have previously been detected, but the threat is still there, the peak level memory will give you voice and LED notifications which encourage you to act. If there is a false alarm, and you safely know there is no threat, a hush button will allow you to temporarily silence the alarm.
