You’re going to be late, Jen,’ Mark says, his tone gentle. He can probably sense something isn’t right. That, or he’s found my discarded wedding ring and is worried it’s happening again. The memory of the last time I slipped my ring from my finger and hurled it at Mark is still fresh in my mind. I cringe as I recall the stream of expletives and insults that flew from my mouth. It wasn’t my finest moment. What a thrilling read. Kept me guessing who the guilty person was. Jenny didn't have a great childhood as her father went to prison for a very long time and she has never told anyone the truth as she worries that they will think that she has his evil genes. To begin with, the vet practice didn’t even have any veterinary nurses – we only had a small client list and Hayley ran pretty much everything while we did the direct pet care. Our plan had always been to build the business, though – and three years ago, things finally came together when we hired Vanessa, who is the senior nurse now. Nisha came on board more recently, at the same time as Abi who Hayley is training up on the reception but who also has her eye on becoming a veterinary nurse; she’s bright and enthusiastic and young enough to ‘mould’. It’s a happy practice. We all get along – each bringing a unique set of skills to the table.

I loved the storyline. It captured the mind of a criminal, dark thoughts and doubts amazingly. It made so much sense when I read that the author has a psychology degree and worked with prisoners. Meet Jenny. Local vet. Add into the mix, her husband Mark.Put them together in a sleepy Devon village. At any rate, if you like mystery thrillers, not a bad read. I think this author has potential for more good books. It was, what I term, an easy read. I finished it in 2 days. It was a pleasure to read. My list of preferred authors now gathering new names.

It gets a little confusin A great thrilling read. We all have family secrets but Jenny's is so dark. Her father really messed with her mind I am surprised that she is still so normal. Did not like Mark he was too weak for Jenny he needed to trust her more yes she wasn't completely honest but what he did was so wrong. Jenny is the daughter of a serial killer. She is trying everything to make her past stay there, in the past. But someone is not letting her go. I really enjoyed this story and listened to the audiobook over the course of a day. I was immediately drawn to Jenny and what she was going through. I honestly didn’t know whether I could trust her as a narrator or if she was truly innocent. Suffice to say there are lots of red herrings, misdirection’s and tension to keep the reader interested. Jenny herself makes some questionable choices, as does her husband. In a sleepy Devon village, a young girl is taken from the streets. Local vet, Jenny, is horrified. This kind of thing doesn’t happen here.Just finished this last night, what a story. Jenny has a terrible secret that she has told no one, not even her husband. When dead animals keep being left on her doorstep she feels she is losing it,. Is she doing it without knowing or someone that has found out her dark secret. I’ve been in a major reading slump for a year but this has pulled me right out of it. Every spare moment I had, I was reading this and staying up to the early hours. So many interesting characters they each added to the storyline and just when I thought that I knew who it was it wasn't.

This has been completely unpredictable and OMG THAT ENDING!!!! I need more!! I’m really hoping that there is more to come because Hunter cannot leave it like that! I’ve literally been like “nooooo” Bar her need to remove it for work sometimes, it’s only ever come off her finger once before during our ten-year marriage. And on that occasion, all hell broke loose. Did she throw this at me last night? I couldn’t have been too drunk to remember. It was only one bottle of wine. But something made her take it off. And now she’s hiding away in the en suite.

I will say though- this read started a bit slowly with a large build-up. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it resulted in me piecing together the plot twist a little more than halfway through. I wasn’t aware as to how it would play out though so it’s safe to say I was still hooked to the read. The final nail in the coffin for me was the absolutely unnecessary epilogue in which one of Jenny's children cruelly pulls the wings from a butterfly only to smash the poor thing into the table. This was supposedly to cause Jenny to wonder if the "serial killer gene" skipped a generation to "infect" her child, but due to the fact that there was a lot of talk about animal mutilations in this book just leads me to seriously wonder about the author herself.

I feel this book was cleverly done. Especially since the crime was similar to her father’s crimes. Is it a copycat or can someone be trying to get away with murder by using Jen? It is twisted and gripping, a story that will make thriller readers enjoy it as a standalone, if not part of the series. But when a local woman goes missing in her tiny village, one who does not get along with Jenny, it causes a lot of upset and concern. When I first saw the title, thought it was a sequel to the first book by this author, The Serial Killer’s Wife. It is not. This is another twisty tale of a family and how the evil of one affects all the lives around them. While I guessed who the killer was, still found this to be an enjoyable read and would recommend to fans of this genre! I had a lot of problems with this book. First, I'm not sure how this can be part of a series....when the characters are different? Yes, they both dealt with serial killers, but a series? That is like saying King's It and Tolkein's The Hobbit are a series because they both have spiders in them. Most of the story is told through a dual narrative carried by Mark and Jenny; additional facts are provided by recalled conversations between a father and daughter, and extracts from a true crime book and commentary from the anonymous author about interactions with the book’s subject. I read this in one sitting. It was fast paced and had lots of red herrings to keep me guessing. I can’t wait to see what Alice Hunter comes up with next. The serial killer’s mother, anyone? I scrub at them with a nail brush for what feels like ten minutes before leaving the sanctuary of the bathroom with my dirty pyjamas bundled in my arms. I lift the lid of the hamper and shove them underneath the other clothes. I don’t want Mark to see them. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
