Combine with SUPRACOLOR ® Soft Aquarelle for wash drawings and watercolour effects in mixed techniques, or PABLO ® pencils for details, hatching and to colour numerous media. With solid leads and a wide range of colours created from highly concentrated pigments, they have been made for professional level work. In fact when I first purchased mine, I was so worried about using them, that it took almost a week to actually use them on a piece of art and even then I was handling them as if they had explosives attached to them.

p>Caran D'Ache Luminance Colour Pencil Sets feature top of the range permanent lead for artists and creative professionals. In summary, Caran d’Ache Luminance 6901 Permanent Pencils are a high-grade product and, in the hands of professional coloured pencil artists, would be certain to improve their work. All in all, there is very little, if anything wrong with these pencils, I love my Caran Dache Luminance Color Pencils.White is very useful as a burnisher, although it changes the underlying colour slightly it does add shine. However, it was a good test – the colour is strong, easily darkened, but I should have reserved some lighter parts; I tried a touch of putty rubber, but soon abandoned it – it works well on darker colours, but not so well with the mid-tones, especially the greens: tends to smear them. Luminance 6901 Coloured Pencils from Caran D'Ache combine the highest lightfastness with the smoothness of a permanent lead.

This set came in a sturdy card box, lined with a set of channels which held the pencils firmly in place – a useful consideration if you’re receiving them by post: they could tolerate a good shaking. core, the Luminance range is a wax based pencil and although when laying down the colour it is thick and creamy, the core is not ridiculously soft and holds a fine point quite well. As with everything in life, there has to be a best and a worst, although I am very young in terms of my time as a colored pencil artist, even I can tell what the finest quality coloured pencil is, and Caran D'ache Luminance takes the crown. The pencils themselves are cased in cedarwood, making them handsome artefacts in their own right, which means they are pleasant to hold and also makes them beautifully easy to sharpen.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I used a very slight touch of carbon black ink, but the black pencil was quite adequate to achieve more precise, and darker, patches. Luminance 6901™ combines the best possible lightfastness with the smoothness of a permanent lead made with wax.Its extreme lightfastness is confirmed by the most rigourous tests, earning Luminance 6901 top results. To test the pencils, I used them with ink on laid paper and on their own on two makes of 200gm paper, one somewhat rougher than the other. I found they worked well on all three papers, laying down colour which was vibrant from the start, and offered a creamy consistency: reminding me slightly of using oil pastels. The pencil is strong and cushioned, with a firm lead that sharpens easily to a point without dropping out.
