Jacob Walters′s dad has worked to make his son′s life a living hell. But when the cute new transfer student suffers his father′s wrath, Jacob must make the hardest decisions of his life. Indeed, Skylar’s tendency to wear skirts gets him detention, and gets Jacob’s father involved: a school board member wants to institute a gender-restrictive dress code. The friends and family who rally around Skylar help him to see that he is valued, even in a society that largely devalues the worth of disabled people. This realization is the story’s turning point, helping to bring the narrative to a satisfying conclusion. Poetry is a very individual experience-- Every single person has a unique experience to the way it is written. No two interpretations of any one poem are the same. When a poet writes a poem, they are, in essence, writing to themselves. Poems are personal. There is a piece of the author within every word. Poetry tells many a story, and it tells them through a unique medium of thought, emotion, and word choice. Jacob is self-conscious about his appearance (although it only comes up when it’s related to Skylar being into him… okay). Don’t get me wrong: I totally understand disliking the way you look (I do too lmao) but in this book the issue is never actually explored. Jacob just whines about being “too pale and skinny” for Skylar to ever like him (as if skinny white e-boys aren’t the beauty standard in 2022 🥴). It’s not really body dysmorphia, and he isn’t even unattractive (he’s literally always described as super hot!!!). It honestly just felt like Jacob was throwing himself a pity party.

Poetry is such a personal experience on what will impact us when we read the words and what won't. We all view things differently and this is one reason I love to read poetry. I enjoy seeing how others piece together what they are experiencing and how it brings some insight into my own life. Some words hit harder than others, some collections work and some don't. For me, Every Word You Cannot Say completely worked and there were a few times tears stung my eyes. He's like me. He's broken, hurting. This, all of this, is not what I expected, it's not the idea of him I had in my head. It makes him more real to me. And honestly, it makes him beautiful." You cannot fix me because I am not broken. And even though everything has changed, I am still more than I've ever been. And after that it’s just the typical miscommunication thing. Skylar refuses to talk to Jacob for a while but then at the very end Jacob publicly professes his love for Skylar then they kiss and everybody cheers (that’s not a joke btw. There’s an actual crowd cheering 😶).I am beyond excited to reveal the cover of my newest young adult novel, Every Word You Never Said!Lucia Barreda, the same amazing artist that created the character art for Watching for Comets, has not only drawn the character art for this story, but she stepped up and designed a stunning cover for the book as well. I love it, and I'm sure you will too.

Sometimes I read a book that brings a constant smile to my face because it’s incredibly heartwarming and uplifting. So much so that I don’t even care about the minor details I liked less or frowned upon. Every Word You Never Said is such a book. In the moving young adult romance Every Word You Never Said, two gay teenagers find each other and fight bigotry.Hey , look at me . Sky," I beg him, and raise our entwined fingers for him to see." I'm not letting go." Love at 1st sight is bad enough as it is (I despise it!!!). But this book was worse, because not only did they immediately start liking each other, but also, as the story progressed, there were no other reasons for them to be together! I read the whole book and the only reason I can find for them to “like” each other is: they find the other hot. The project, which has proven incredibly popular across the world and gone on to become a best selling book, has also afforded him numerous exciting opportunities, including an invitation to dinner with the US Ambassador to South Africa, Donald Gipps as a consultant on digital development within South Africa, and a speaking spot at TEDx Johannesburg. Indeed, even after giving this five stars, I feel like that's not quite what I meant. Reviewing poetry also feels equally as such, but this moved me in a way I felt compelled to share.
