Others will probably find the set up very intriguing and enjoy the way it was developed throughout the novel--because it is extremely well developed and detailed--but, due to personal preferences, that was not the case for me. I’m not gonna lie, there were a few parts where I had no idea what was happening, but that did not lesson my enjoyment of the book in the slightest. It was dimly lit by colored glows under tables and light filaments like sprays of vivid flowers in the corners.

Recommended for teens who enjoy exciting romantic adventures with some soft science fiction elements, especially those looking for LGBTQ representation. Everina Maxwell's writing has everything you could ask: impossible choices, divided loyalties, dry wit, and operatic struggle with bureaucracy. Though the romance is definitely a subplot, the story of acceptance and love was incredibly powerful and it will stick with me for a very long time.Come for the worldbuilding, space politics, and a twisting turning mystery, and stay because you love the main characters so much. There are a million more things I feel like I could mention about this book to convey how much I loved it, but I also find it hard to put those into words, so I’ll just say I highly recommend this book if you enjoy queer science fiction with a generous side of romance. There is a fascinating universe as a background to the story, with the mysterious shards, and the ‘resolution’ who maintain peace.

Her light touch and considering eye are applied thoughtfully, warmly, and yet without mercy to the failures of an interstellar bureaucracy and the people who both make those failures happen; to the difficulties of diplomatic ties between planets that rely on personal ties between human beings; to the ways people try to get what they want from each other, and the ways they fail to understand each other. It was a glittering front for an underground gambling ring, so it was full of dangerous people, but Tennal had stopped caring who he mingled with some time ago. Now this is confusing, Tennal would have been born around the time his genparent was going through experiments, how come he inherited the alien relic caused telepathy? While the first part of the book is a bit slower as we meet the characters, get to know their personalities and idiosyncrasies, and are introduced to the overarching society/hierarchy/plot, events start picking up speed and spiraling to new and interesting heights. If you’re interested in reading this book, definitely go in it for the space and sci-fi elements or the protagonist’s journey!I truly liked how the novel’s science worked and was explained, as well as the tech and the mechanics of the sync bonds, but I wasn’t overjoyed about where the story then took these concepts. While this is perhaps not a flaw of the book itself, per se, I simply found it hard to fully sympathize with Surit when he was untangling his feelings surrounding his mother’s pension, the military, and what it truly is. I would recommend this one to readers open to sci fantasy story with fast plot and a hot queer romance.
