Description

Haunted Technology / Electromagnetic Ghosts: The ghosts' presence is first experienced when various technology goes haywire. The salvage crew goes into the fog in hopes of finding a big enough load of salvage to smuggle Mrs. E into Port Oro to find a cure. when Chess uncovers one the most valuable treasure of his life he is a few steps away from getting in Kodoc’s clutches. The Fog Diver is the fantasy MG I've been looking for all year. It's fun, and it has heart and danger and complete originality. I loved it! We're all familiar with tragedies, aren't we? Most of us learned about them in school, through Shakespeare - possibly first with (my favourite) Macbeth. A guy with out of control ambition does unthinkable things to good people and the world swirls in demonic confusion until he is brought to his knees and destroyed. Damn. That gets my blood going.

Other references that are interwoven into the film include the name of the John Houseman character "Mr. Machen" (a reference to Welsh horror fantasist Arthur Machen); a radio report that mentions Arkham Reef; and the town's coroner Dr. Phibes was named after the titular character of the horror films starring Vincent Price from the early 1970s.

THE ARCHIVES

Yet the lives at this beach house are anything but simple; everything is complicated and tangled. Kathy, a recovering addict and cleaning woman by trade, inherits a bungalow that receives notices about business tax evasion. She never opens the mail, even when the county sends several envelopes announcing an auction sale of her house. The County has the wrong house, but no one knows this. Not even the former political refugee and immigrant, Behrani, a Persian exile who has bought the house for his family. While in America, Behrani, a former wealthy Colonel, works two jobs as a roadside garbage man and at a convenience store and yet he tries to maintain his standard of living so that his daughter marries into privilege. When he sees the house for sale, he buys it, quits his jobs, and tries to settle on a path of real estate development. Cabell, Craig (2003). James Herbert: Devil in the Dark. Kathy Nicolo, a rehabilitating drug and alcohol addict, loses her home by accident. She already lost her husband. Apart from that, she has also lost her self respect and will to succeed in anything, a long time ago. She profiles perfectly. Any strenous event is dealt with the narcotic way, although she has been trying to change her life after rehab and succeeded until now. Glowing Eyelights of Undeath: Blake and the rest of the ghosts have red eyes in the final showdown in the church.

The book has a LOT of information in the beginning and it seemed a little slow however the end makes up for it with it’s fast paced action. I am hoping the next books will have a lot more action in it since a lot of what was in this books was build and information. Soon the fog shifts and travels as though it has a mind of its own, turning those unfortunate enough to come across it into homicidal/suicidal maniacs who kill without remorse, and often worse. Respectable figures including teachers and priests engage in crimes ranging from public urination to paedophilia. A Boeing 747 pilot is also driven insane and crashes the aircraft into the Post Office Tower (now BT Tower) in London. This novel has achieved deserved popularity -- somewhat surprisingly since it is densely written and not a terribly easy read. Nevertheless, it is a gripping story, well told, and difficult to put down. There are parallel novels in American literature, but that does not detract from the merits of this book. This novel - outlining the doomed and intertwined lives of Behrani, a former colonel in Iran and now struggling to have a life of dignity in the USA; Kathy Nicolo, a pretty young woman given a raw deal by life; and Sheriff Lester Burdon, who falls in love with Kathy against his better judgement - is such a book.

Oh, Crap!: Most of the second half of the movie is full of moments like this such as Andy being trapped by the ghosts in his home after they kill Ms. Kobritz and later Stevie being trapped by the revenants in the lighthouse.

Why do I mention this? Well, even though House of Sand and Fog preceded the start of the housing boom, it's essentially the story of a house-flip gone horribly wrong. It pits Kathy Nicolo, a recently-divorced former substance abuser, against Massoud Behrani, a former Iranian colonel (he's still Iranian, but no longer a colonel) who now balances two unskilled jobs, in a life-and-death struggle for a California bungalow with an ocean view. The Story is told in one POV Chess, I actually enjoyed all the kids in this book. I wanted more character development, but the world build was pretty good, I actually found it very interesting how the world was destroyed. Everytown, America: Despite being a seaside town, what we see of Antonio Bay fits the trope. The festival even looks a bit like a 4th of July celebration. I enjoyed the real estate aspects of the plot. I also liked the way that Dubus has us ride along with each character giving us free access to their inner thoughts, their hopes, and desires. He also shows how many chances people get to turn their life around. The many hands that are outstretched to keep them from falling too far. Sometimes it just doesn’t matter how much help someone receives they continue to make the same bad decisions until tragedy overtakes them sometimes with equally tragic results for others.

For a horror novel, The Fog isn’t particularly scary, but it’s an excellent action novel with plenty of violent surprises. It reminded me of an environmental disaster story, a medical thriller, and a high-adventure rescue mission. Other sections recalled a modern zombie adventure or even my favorite Able Team installment, Army of Devils by G.H. Frost. There were also several gratuitous and graphic sex scenes, if that’s your bag.

Condensation Clue: One of the girls on the first boat to be engulfed draws a set of scales on the fogged-up window in a trance. Presumably this is to foreshadow the ghosts' desire to even the score against the town. Actor Allusion: Jamie Lee Curtis is the one who protects Andy from the horrors, you might say taking on the role of a babysitter.
