Description

His widely-praised debut picture book, The Night Gardener , was a collaboration with his brother Terry. He helped create and host the National Geographic miniseries One Strange Rock, with Will Smith, and has a MasterClass on exploration. His work is a blend of traditional and contemporary techniques, using ink or graphite mixed with digital.

In terms of my teaching, I was inspired about where this would fit into a wide variety of areas of the curriculum, including science, PHSE and history. The Darkest Dark is a children's picture book co-written by Chris Hadfield and Kate Fillion and co-illustrated by Eric Fan and Terry Fan. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Being written by an astronaut gives the book a weight that could not otherwise be achieved and creates the sense of being able to reach your dreams whatever the dream is.

But when he watches the Apollo 11 moon landing on TV in July of 1969, while on vacation on Stag Island, Ontario, he realizes that outer space, the very thing he finds most entrancing, is the darkest dark there is. For longer trips when we’re staying in one place for a while, the Cocoon Breeze is exactly what we need. After months of waiting, they can’t stand the anticipation anymore and rip open the box to turn it on. Chris Hadfield is one of the world's most seasoned and accomplished astronauts, and is the author of the number one international bestseller, An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, and You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes. It’s a special feeling that somebody has gone to the effort of choosing it and it has been put together with you in mind.Convinced that aliens are lurking in the dark, young Chris has trouble at bedtime, and doesn't really want to sleep in a separate room from his parents. The short summary by Chris on how he became an astronaut as well as pictures from his childhood through to space link the story to real life, giving a greater depth to the experience. He has been to space three times and was Commander of the International Space Station for five months on his most recent mission.

The story follows Chris as a child in the run up to witnessing the 1969 moon landings and his childhood dreams enacted out in his own imagination as a child. With spectacular colour illustrations by top team, The Fan Brothers, this gorgeous picture book offers both reassurance and a thrilling ride through space. It functions as an exploration of a common childhood fear, and how young people might confront and overcome that fear, through reexamination and through expanding (or changing) one's perspective, but it is also a depiction of a momentous moment in human history, as seen through the eyes of one child. The darkest dark is a beautiful picture book inspired by Chris Hadfield's childhood, he dreams of one day becoming an astronaut and his imagination is limitless, yet he fears the dark and all the aliens that may be sneaking up on him at night until he watches the 1969 moon landings and realises that space is the darkest dark possible and he wants desperately to be able to explore it. The artwork here, done in pencil and colored digitally, was absolutely lovely, capturing both the beauty and the menace of the dark which so frightened the story's hero. Together they also illustrated The Darkest Dark, written by Chris Hadfield and Kate Fillion, and The Antlered Ship, written by Dashka Slater. Opening with a special letter from the first British ESA astronaut Tim Peake, this rhyming picture book will inspire any child who gazes at the night sky, longing to explore space.
