By that time her insights, which were pretty good- anger is not a feeling but a defense, for example- were getting repetitive. I earned my doctorate in the early 1990s, after some of the Dr Gildiner’s stories, which took place in Canada, occurred. This is being billed as an "inspiring" book, but I'm not sure inspired is the emotion I felt after reading it. Gildiner's approach, while it does not account for biology, is intellectual, compassionate, and creative, and provides a path for her patients to do the hard work and reap the benefits of getting better.

Madeline comes to be a patient by unconventional means: Gildiner has retired but is coaxed out of retirement and convinced to treat Madeline by her father, a former patient whom Gildiner counseled for only a short while. While growing up far too fast, scrambling to take care of herself and her siblings when her father abandoned them, her instinctual overdrive to survive provides her with the motivation and internal resources to help her achieve surprising mental health in adulthood. Makes you appreciate the 'could have beens' that you escaped and appreciate the solid grounding of your life .I found it refreshing that the author did not shy away from pointing out her own mistakes during treatment. The book is written with sensitivity and is intended to honour these people who had to work through some pretty challenging issues.

These five people may at first have seemed vastly different, yet when the economic and cultural layers were peeled away, their unconscious needs were strikingly similar. A quick edit could have eliminated some common microaggressions; I'm not sure why the author or the editorial staff made the decision to print the text as-is. And there are definitely many descriptions that might trigger you, if you have a history of abuse, neglect, assault or trauma. She had masses of shoulder-length blond highlighted hair and her porcelain skin contrasted sharply with her dark eyes.I learned so much about the power of the human subconscious and the ability of psychotherapy to break through. A book that inspires, makes you think and feel, and could possibly even make you look at some of your behaviors differently. It makes me wonder if the hero angle was an afterthought-a way to justify the use of all those personal details.

Again, I can see how this book might be helpful for therapists, but I definitely don’t recommend it for the rest of us. An eclectic therapist, she uses sociological, Freudian, Gestalt, Rogerian, and Cognitive Behavioral approaches—whatever works—to help her patients heal. The worst part was the shame; forever after she’d have to tell anyone she ever slept with that she had herpes or was a carrier. With a novelist's storytelling gift, Gildiner recounts the details of their struggles, their paths to recovery, and her own tale of growth as a therapist. Each patient embodies self-reflection, stoicism, perseverance, and forgiveness as they work unflinchingly to face the truth. If a person is continually stressed, the stress uses up the immune system and there’s nothing left to fight cancer. In introducing their relationship, the author made some narrative decisions that I disagree with, for example deadnaming Jane, and describing Jane's transition using incorrect pronouns.
