Now, if you get reps in with that — not just do it one time or just when I tell you to — what you may notice is that you have a little bit more room for other — literally, for other things to happen that can’t happen when the constriction is like that. Menakem: Notice the rage. Notice the silence. Notice all of the stuff. And that’s the culture-building that I’m talking about. That’s the container-building.

Menakem Introduces a model he refers to as "somatic abolitionism," which focuses on feeling and healing the embodied trauma of racial injustice. Menakem: [ laughs] So what happened was, I asked one question. I said, “How many people in here believe in diversity?” Everybody shot their hands up. Boom. Everybody. I said, “Answer this one next question.” And I said, “Don’t bring your hands down. Answer this question. Diverse from what?” Menakem, Remaa. (2019) Video interview on the Connectfulness Practice Podcast—Mending Racialized Trauma, A Body-Centered Approach. https://youtu.be/hC-O5UOvh1s A powerful book, a call for all of us to get to work, with practical suggestions presented in historical contexts, for us to begin to heal. I can’t praise Mr. Menakem enough, or be more grateful for the gift that he has given us all. Let us use it wisely and comprehensively.

Cultural and Intergenerational Trauma

Tippett: One of the things you — this was one of the five anchors for moving through clean pain — the first one, Anchor 1, was: Shut up. Most of the book covers the history and reality of issues relating to white supremacy, trauma -and how it has affected our society, mostly relating to American culture. In most chapters, there is a section of Body-Centered Practices, easily adaptable as guided meditations. Grounding: connecting with the earth and our embodied self (particularly during times of crisis and distress) via mindful awareness of physical sensations (e.g. literally feeling your feet on the ground). Tippett: Resmaa Menakem has a clinical practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and teaches and presents widely. His books include the New York Times best-selling My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies.

The On Being Project is located on Dakota land. Our lovely theme music is provided and composed by Zoë Keating. And the last voice that you hear singing at the end of our show is Cameron Kinghorn. My Grandmother’s Hands is a call to action for all of us to recognize that racism is not only about the head, but about the body, and introduces an alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond our entrenched racialized divide. Menakem: So the idea that people could go through a thousand years of the Dark Ages and come out of that unscathed — 500 A.D. to 1500 is when we’re talking about, when we say the Dark Ages. So you mean to tell me that the level of brutalization — The healing that results on an individual and group level can be taken into the community, for each of the groups that receive focus in the book, as well applying to the greater community. Third, he basically only talks about body work (also known as somatic therapy) yet also has some subtle fat shaming and anti-fatness which is completely antithetical to the purpose of body work. While dealing with the subject of clean pain, the author introduces the Five Anchors , the process for moving through clean pain and when someone senses conflict building.
