After testing (some of which you can see in this article’s images) and much research, here is a list of very dark pencils to consider… Depending on the material of your mechanical pencil will determine whether it is recyclable. If it is made of 100 percent plastic, then it is not, but if it is made of a metal frame and parts, then it can be recycled. Why pencils are not used in space? This type of pencil helps create the darkest and the thinnest of lines, given its hardness levels. This happens because it falls towards the end of the “H” or hardness scale, hence, giving a hard touch. It is a great option particularly for those who are into drawing and sketching and wish to draw dark and think lines. 14. 6H is an extremely light shade of gray that leaves a very light imprint on paper. It can be a great choice for sketches where you need to add light shades or slightly fill in the empty spaces with a pencil. 12. 4H If you want to lighten a colour, lay down a white base first then work over it with the desired colour, then work over it with white again, this technique will lighten the colour and create a great pastel version. If you want more of the same hue just work in layers on top of the white base to achieve the colour you want. This technique will work for paint and coloured pencils.

The Staedtler Mars Lumograph 12B pencil is the graphite pencil that has the highest B rating of any pencil on the graphite scale. Which in theory makes it the darkest wooden drawing pencil that there is. Being a German-made pencil it is usually a couple of degrees harder than a Japanese pencil. Although some reviewers have said that it is slighter softer to write with than a Mitsubishi Hi Uni Pencil. 4.2. Mitsubishi Hi Uni Pencil 10B Charcoal pencils are also made from a form of carbon and are darker than the darkest graphite pencils. However, unlike graphite which is mined from the ground Charcoal is produced by slowly burning wood or other naturally occurring substances in a container with restricted airflow. This leads to the production of charcoal from the wood that had not completely burned through. Choose your boldest colours for your palette and enjoy the process of layering and blending colours together or layering them over the white pencil to create pastel tones. The graphite scale (lead hardness scale) is a visual means of categorizing the resultant marks from pencils with cores that have different ratios of graphite to clay. If you are using coloured pencils, or chalk pastels remember not to wipe the debris with the side of your hand as this will create a smudged effect, aim to blow away your surplus pencil debri or lift paper up and tap the excess off. Or work upright on an easel so the debris just falls off whilst working.Always use a fixative on chalk or oil pastels, watercolour pencils, and gouache to ensure longevity of your work. When working with pastels, spray during and after the drawing process. Apply to your work in layers, then wait a minute to dry then continue with the drawing. The final coat will protect the finished picture from the elements and from smudging. This pencil is best for those who like to draw, and it is particularly meant for adding dark values to your drawing pieces. This is also a great option for creating portraits where you would want to achieve realistic textures like skin, fur or fabric. 4. 5B This pencil produces a darker mark than the ones after it and is quite softer than a 2B pencil for example. This is because the higher number of B that a pencil is, the softer the pencil will be. 5. 4B Easy-to-clean finish: from soap scum to cooking splatters, these tiles are incredibly easy to clean, making them a low-maintenance decor choice Other pencil companies, like Aspara, make drawing pencils that get quite dark, but in our testing they aren’t quite as dark as the ones listed above. Also, many of these pencils have gotten to be hard to find so were didn’t include them on this list some of the excellent, and very dark, but also very rare pencils include:

However, it proved to be really brittle and soft and required a proper holder for one to be able to contain it.In the event that you make an error when writing or drawing with a pencil, you can erase it and start over with your eraser. Putting erasers on the pencils means you do not have to carry around a separate eraser. What kind of pencils do artists use? This is an excellent choice of pencil for light, fine and even shading. It is more towards the gray side and less shiny because of the amount of clay it contains. It is also easier to keep sharp so can be easily used for shading and sketching. 13. 5H
