Description

About the content of the book all I can say is that Marina Abramovic is a fascinating human being with a strong will that leads her to the most interesting conclusions about herself, her body and the world around her.

Adrian Heathfield is Professor of Performance and Visual Culture at the University of Roehampton, London. The energy present can help you induce different higher states of consciousness, like clairvoyance, astral travelling, and telepathy among others, besides bring each partcipant closer to her/himself through relaxation, increase of perception and paraperception, reflexion and travelling inside and outside yourself, further prospecting who you are as a self, a soul, a spirit.

The combination of the light and the color of the walls made everyone’s skin yellowish-greenish, like they were liver-sick. But on the other hand it was apparently written after a really extensive interview process and clearly Marina is happy with the result, and the fact that it was such a ‘this happened then this happened then this happened’ book (not in a bad way!

The exchange of energy between herself and the thousands of people who elected to sit still and stare into her eyes was both very ordinary and extraordinary. Her mother, who was quite extreme too – stern, strict and unhappy with domestic life – often beat her precocious little daughter black and blue, then sent her to live with her grandmother for a while.

The works include reenactments of Vito Acconci's Seedbed (1972), in which the artist occupied the space under a false floor, masturbating and speaking through a microphone to visitors above; Valie Export's Action Pants: Genital Panic (1969) in which Export walked through a movie theater in crotchless pants, challenging the audience to turn from the images of women on the screen to a real female body; and Abramovic's own Lips of Thomas (1975), in which she ate a kilogram of honey and drank a liter of red wine before breaking her glass with her hand, incising a star in her stomach with a razor blade, whipping herself until she "no longer felt pain," then lying down on an ice cross while a space heater suspended above her caused her to bleed even more profusely. Marina is presented in this book as an open, vulnerable figure, her methods and ideology made accessible through a thorough excavation of her life, from childhood to present day.Marina Abramovic is the world's most celebrated performance artist, nicknamed the "Grandmother of Performance Art" for her extensive body of work, she's led a fascinating life, from a dark childhood in postwar Yugoslavia to finding worldwide fame as an artist known for testing, and overcoming, the limits of fear and pain. Walk Through Walls begins with a memorable forest walk that Abramović takes with her grandmother when she is four. The facility includes a height-adjustable bench, tracking hoist system, a centrally-placed toilet, a height-adjustable basin and a shower. This celebration of nearly fifty years of groundbreaking performance art demonstrated once again that Marina Abramovic is truly a force of nature.

The way her performances build upon and interact with one another is delineated here with clarity: I genuinely feel enriched from this new understanding I have of her work and what she has tried, and has succeeded, to achieve. The child of Communist war-hero parents under Tito’s regime in postwar Yugoslavia, she was raised with a relentless work ethic. Her visceral and extreme performances have tested the limits of both body and mind, communicating with audiences worldwide on a personal and political level. But nothing could quell her insatiable curiosity, her desire to connect with people, or her distinctly Balkan sense of humor—all of which informs her art and her life.
