Failing to get the attention of her busy father, a lonely girl turns back to a fantastic world for friendship and adventure. Together, they navigate treacherous landscapes, encounter mysterious allies, and unravel secrets that shape their destinies. I enjoyed the ending, which, though a bit of a twist, manages to tie everything together in a beautiful way.

Quest finds the girl and boy accosted in a real world park by a king dressed in yellow, who presses an empty bandolier and a rainbow map before being pulled back through a door to the fantasy world by the guards from the first book. When you turn the pages of the book and see the castle-like city for the first time with its golden domes and green parasol-carrying residents, it’s a jaw-dropper. Maybe I’m justifying everything, but it seems to me that Becker was trying more than anything else to have a bad guy who was easy to spot (note the golden helmet) and that looked different from the residents of the water-based city. For the latter, think Harold and the Purple Crayon (1955) by Crockett Johnson, as well as Magpie Magic (1999) by April Wilson and Chalk (2010) by Bill Thomson – two titles which, like this book, are wordless picturebooks. I don’t get to use this word very often when I’m talking about books for young children but I’m going to dust it off and use it now: Beautiful.Explain that there are no words in Journey and that everyone will need to look closely at the pictures to help create the story as you go along. The Journey Trilogy is breathtaking modern classic of fantasy from Aaron Becker that can captivate kids from age 2 to 102. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. This struck me as a bit unfortunate, but upon closer examination I realized that I couldn’t tell the race of the girl either. All emerging and established members of the National Park City Family must agree to five commitments.

The absence of words in the books also encourages readers to interpret and construct their own stories, fostering critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills. Prepare for the journey of a lifetime, perfect for anyone interested in history, migration, and human adventure!

The "story" becomes so much more meaningful when you are given license to be a part of it--literally help create it as you go, even though there might be a preconceived idea in the mind of the author. This time, her father follows her to her room and discovers the open door and the fantastical world on the other side. The winner of the prestigious Caldecott Honor; and described by the New York Times as 'a masterwork'; Aaron Becker's stunning; wordless picture book debut about self-determination and unexpected friendship follows a little girl who draws a magic door on her bedroom wall. He’s a trained artist, and clearly a well-trained one, but if he excels in this area it is due to his talent rather than his experience. A lonely girl draws a magic door on her bedroom wall and through it escapes into a world where wonder, adventure and danger abound.
