How can you think that an obviously tight animation budget and mediocre voice acting can be a substitute for a great actor? After the Fall is a co-op multiplayer, post-apocalyptic, first-person shooter from the developers of Arizona Sunshine, Vertigo Games. Decades after the 1980s apocalypse turned Los Angeles into a frozen wasteland, you join a group of underground survivors becoming what’s known as a Harvest Runner. Tasked with expanding your group’s hold on the city, you must clear vast areas of the undead while also collecting the required resources to provide your base, The Line, with the bare necessities to survive another day in this brutal world. The obsessive acts turn violent, sexual and the all-consuming nature was palpable during my 12-hour playthrough. I also need to mention the load times, which are wild considering I played the native PS5 version of the game. Every scene has a lengthy loading screen bookending it, and it gets very old very fast. I’m not somebody who usually cares about or even notices bad load times, which I’d say isn’t a good sign. Due to its big licence and popular influences, it comes as a particularly sharp disappointment that the writing in the game version of Vertigo is the worst thing about it. Awkward animation and mediocre voice acting certainly don’t help. There are multiple choices you can make in the game as well as different dialogue options, but the main narrative stays the same. It has a plethora of content that's entertaining and thrilling to play both solo and as a squad. If you’re an FPS fan or are just looking for some multiplayer entertainment, we’d highly recommend you give this title a shot. The Line is where you'll begin every play session, and it's a bustling multiplayer hub of activity with up to 32 other players present. With After the Fall being cross-play with PCVR platforms, this hub is the perfect place to chat to other more experienced players, edit your loadout, and find a squad if you happen to be playing alone. You might reasonably expect that a game named after the film Vertigo would, you know, follow the plot of Vertigo, but no. Everything happens in service of an increasingly ridiculous story, which reduces a film that featured male obsession, the male gaze and the ways in which victims unknowingly facilitate their own abuse, to the vendetta of a psychopath with a seemingly unlimited supply of drugs. If you thought the film was convoluted, try getting your head around this nonsense. It is almost worth playing for the part where an elderly man is, apparently convincingly, impersonated by a 24-year-old woman in a trenchcoat and sunglasses. Other moments in the game have levels that you can explore at your own pace. You’re normally confined to a room or few, but the varying scope of these explorable parts never felt all too necessary. Like the dialogue, the only way to proceed these parts is to exhaust all options as opposed to choosing your own. Generally, this is fine gameplay wise but the performance stutters – even on performance mode – and the long loading times made going to and from activities a chore. It sometimes felt that it forgot this was a game and sprinkled a little bit of interactivity to make it as such, but I honestly would have been fine with either a deeper emphasis on player urgency or a passive experience. The middling ground Vertigo finds it on, doesn’t make this the best to play despite the experience being worthwhile. The story takes place through multiple timelines, following a slew of characters. At the centre of it all is Ed Miller. Miller awakes in the middle of the road, with his car at the bottom of a cliff; he spots a man he seemingly thinks is his father about to jump off a bridge nearby. Chasing after him, Ed is too late and without hesitance attempts to follow the same fate. He suddenly experiences Vertigo whilst atop the bridge, and before he can jump he’s saved by a passer-by.

Even in this age of trilogies going home -aka saving the game- and doing something completely different before you continue watching the story isn't the norm for a reason. This version of Vertigo portrays women in a way that is seriously difficult to stomach in a post-#MeToo era. Here, women prey on an unsuspecting man using, for instance, sex and hypnosis to lure him in and do him harm. Male trauma is of course absolutely real, but this game doesn’t have the tools to examine it with the required care, and ends up essentially saying #MenToo – and doing a significant disservice to the body of cinematic work that inspires it. When fiction writer Ed Miller crashes his car and kills his family by driving them off a bridge, his life is completely shattered. After a failed suicide attempt he’s taken home and the tragic events leave him with the worst case of vertigo that doctors have ever seen. The vast majority of the game takes place during Ed’s hypnotherapy sessions, which see you exploring his memories to see if his troubled past can explain recent events. It turns out our Ed is dealing with a tremendous amount of trauma, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from his own descriptions of events. I kind of expected an adventure game, since that is what the studio is known for, and they weren't bad at it. Pendulo Studios have opted for a Telltale inspired approach to character design. Facial features are bold and distinctive, and eyes that might be too big for my taste. I think the choice of its design is to convey human emotion through these characters, without the expensive tech of facial motion capture. In a lot of aspects, it does work. With the strong acting behind it and a good script to work with, the design is serviceable. Characters would befit the scene stylistically for the most part but in some frames they come off as wild caricatures. As well as the digital release next month, a physical version will be hitting retail a couple of months later, on 9th February 2024. Having to press buttons and move the controller does not equal engagement, especially if there is no reason to do it in the first place. There is no failure here, there are no branching storylines, you won't miss out, and you won't "win" anything, you can't be good at it, and you can't get better at it. So what am I supposed to do with this?! It's a passable animated movie that I have to wind up or it won't play, and that is why it actually doesn't deserve a 5, because it's more of a chore that way. Another aspect of the gameplay is accessing Ed’s memories through hypnosis. The difference in perspective in these scenes play out to how they’re told originally, offering a complex juxtaposition to trauma responses. Thematically and gameplay wise these are the strongest parts to play as delving into the psyche rewards you for your time spent.
