Initially on launch water based took longer to dry than solvent based paints especially in high humidity and lower temperatures. As water based technology is increasing this drying gap has been reduced to virtually the same as solvents and water based paints do es have the advantage of retaining sheen throughout its lifetime. All General Finishes water-based topcoats and wood stains are ready to spray from the container without additives with the exception of Conversion Varnish. Always strain material through a medium to fine mesh filter before spraying. If necessary, in hot or dry climates, reduce 10 to 15% with General Finishes Extender to extend the open time. PRE SEALING: Spray two thin layers at intervals of at least 12 hours, and ensure that the paint is dust free and dry to the touch before application of the second coat. Allow the paint to dry for at least 48 hours for acrylic and for 6-12 months for oil paintings before application. Always spray in thin cross-layers at a distance of approximately 20cm from the surface. If possible, lay your painting flat for the best application possible.

This means that without finishing with a coat of primer, water based colours are less likely to stay vibrant for a long time. The best way to keep them vibrant is by using a primer. 4. This means that for artists to be protected, they need to wear a respirator mask when spray painting. Many see water based formulas as the future of spray paint. In the last 20 years, government regulators have recognised the need to reduce the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) being emitted into the atmosphere. These substances, which are present in high levels in solvent-based coatings, are toxic to human health and the environment. Paint manufacturers are now regulated on the VOC contents of their products, and decorative and refinishing industries are regulated on the amount of VOCs that they consume and emit. Solvent-based paints can no longer be the bread and butter of the coatings industry. You could be paying over double the price for a water based spray can compared to a non-water based formula. Most choose not to pay the premium because the benefits don’t justify the current price. 2. Colours may appear less vivid Water based spray paint can be used for every application that traditional solvent or oil based spray paint is good for. It’s designed to be used in the same way, so it’s perfect for most surfaces. Any of these humidity-related factors can contribute to a poor coating of the matte varnish, ultimately leading to the matte particulates in the medium clumping up and forming an opaque, cloudy surface.

General Finishes water-based products can be sprayed through compressed air, HVLP, airless or C.A.S. units. When buying partner items like this one, your contract of sale will be with our Range Plus Partner instead of The Range. The Water Based family comprises a group of water-based paint products which includes spray paints, markers and paints. The cornerstone of this range of tools are the MTN Water Based aerosols which are available 300 and 100 ml formats and represent a revolution in the field of spray painting, both because of its safer and more versatile formulation and for the quality of its pigments. Use a primer. Water based spray paint can appear flat on the first application. To bring out the colour, consider coating with a layer of primer spray for better final results. Plus, a primer layer will help keep your work protected.MTN Water-Based Spray Paints are available in a broad range of matt colours, made using only the highest quality, lightfast pigments. There’s no doubt that solvent based spray paints dry much faster – usually in a matter of minutes. This is much slower than water based formulas that take around 15 minutes to an hour to be fully dry. How can I tell if my spray paint is water based or solvent based? However, if the solvent dries poorly (e.g., absorbed into the paint underneath or mixes with ambient moisture) the dry particulates previously in solution clump-up. This clumping, congealing, or aggregation of the powder-like substances in the matte varnish cause the cloudy, frost effect that obscures the paint job underneath. By using a gloss medium first (no particulates), you reduce the risk of the matte varnish appearing as a cloudy surface. The dreaded “frosted” look with poorly applied matte varnish. The cloudy appearance reduces contrast and color saturation. It’s an unfortunate adverse effect of using matte varnishes without proper conditions (see more about how to prevent and solve this issue below). The Reason You Don’t Want to Use a Gloss Varnish If you can cool your aerosol spray varnish down (~12C or 53F) before spraying it, this will also help prevent the frosted effect.
