The Great Game of Business started a business revolution by introducing the world to open-book management, a new way of running a business that created unprecedented profit and employee engagement. Instead, Paul tries to show in this book how Lean is supposed to be taken: as a life tool and a life way of thinking, not just a work tool meant to increase profit. Short and simple, yet it is filled to the brim with extremely tangible ways to grow your lean culture. Im so glad i did, he makes lean so much fun i love the way he applies lean to all sorts of things in life.

Under such pressure to stay alive—let alone grow—it’s easy for entrepreneurs to get caught up in a never-ending cycle of "sell it—do it, sell it—do it" that leaves them exhausted, frustrated, and unable to get ahead no matter how hard they try. Lean thinking has propelled my business from a small operation in my garage into an international, multi-million dollar enterprise. It also emphasised on giving back to the community though learning and sharing and fastcap is an best example. He graduated from Biola University in 1983 with honors, obtaining a degree in education with an emphasis in Greek and German. When a light switch is flipped the flow of energy that is released reaches the lightbulb in an instant, bringing it to life.

This book presents Dave’s playbook for creating work that matters; building an incredible group of passionate, empowered team members; and winning the race with steady momentum that will roll over any obstacle. And in 2014 was invited to be part of the Liker Leadership Institute, where he continues to teach Lean concepts to others. In such a technical industry it’s surprising to find a world-class lean company with employees whipping out iPhones and filming their 2 second improvements. Instead Barry-Wehmiller manifests the reality that every single person matters, just like in a family. Paul has been married to his wife Leanne since 1983 and they have 2 grown children, Andréa and Kolbe, who all work with him at FastCap.

Through a series of twists and turns he discovered Lean and the Toyota Production System (TPS) which helped to launch his business from the garage into the successful international product development company known as FastCap. In real life I'd probably be annoyed by these attitudes, but as a piece of media it was refreshingly genuine and optimistic. To be lean is to eliminate what bugs you, going one at a time, and standing on it’s two foundational principles: eliminating waste and continuous improvement. It’s not limited to just Paul and FastCap but also includes examples from other organizations practicing 2SL. In our opinion, it’s the perfect solution for companies looking for a simple and fun way to become lean and grow people.By growing his people every day in the daily meeting he creates a workforce that is fully engaged and alive. However, when Paul teaches people about waste he doesn’t immediately approach it from the list of eight terms.

Today the meeting is quite grown-up and mature (just check out their daily meeting checklist to see what we mean). If you ever feel that Paul taught you something make sure to do the same as well for the next person. At the age of 15 he built his own guitar and earned the attention of guitar designer Bob Taylor, who mentored and eventually put Paul to work for Taylor Guitars. The author lays out a simple plan to identify and eliminate waste (could be an unneeded process or physical waste, there are 8 categories) and thereby increase productivity and grow a thriving company. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It’s not necessary to add “sustain” to 3S at a 2 Second Lean company, because sustainment is built into the very frabric of the lean operating system. Paul taught Industrial Arts at Mark Keppel High School where his innovative thinking led to the development of a program that focused on teaching kids to build furniture, rather than the standard high school projects like key racks and cutting boards. I definitely recommend the audio version of the book because Akers has many asides and they are all gold. The chapters of Akers' book are brief, written in layman's terms, include color photos, sum everything up at the end, and are actually pretty entertaining. If you're looking for a simple introduction that will be easy to give to entry level staff, this is a good resource.
