Description

Tanz can talk to ghosts, although she’d prefer it if she couldn’t. Struggling to make ends meet as an actress and wholly unsuited to supply teaching, Tanz is only one bad day away from a meltdown. And the babbling ghosts aren’t helping. I enjoyed the fact that Tanz was an actress trying to book jobs and lighting up the truth around the world of acting. It's tough out there!

I enjoyed the majority of this book as the concept was interesting and it was an easy read. However, it proved to be rather problematic due to the amount of casual misogyny, transphobia, and fatphobic comments made from Tanz, the main character. Not to mention the blatant stereotyping of the gay characters and her dislike of Martin as he isn’t as ‘fabulous’ as the other gay men in her life, such as best friend Milo, who is characterised as being sassy and flamboyant. The protagonist had an air of ‘not like other girls’ about her as she constantly put down Elsa for being interested in her appearance and commented how she finds it easier to have male friends as opposed to female friends. These were common themes throughout its entirety which were very uncomfortable and annoying to read. Newcastle’s dead refuse to stay quiet for long and pretty soon Tanz finds herself haunted by visions of an enigmatic Gin Palace guarded by a mysteriously sinister figure. What could possibly be the meaning of this? Could this be some kind of premonition that could help stop a terrible future tragedy? Tanz is determined to find out – even if it means having to do battle with a poltergeist determined to keep his secrets his own! After an interesting twelve years messing about in front of the camera and traveling the world, Tracy discovered she still loved writing and completed her first full length play KABOOM! A son, many stage plays, screenplays and a music video followed, until 2012 when she realized she was finally ready to do the one thing she’d longed to do since she was six. She wrote her first novel, The Accidental Medium – a crime/horror/comedy tale about an alcohol-soaked, gobby, thrill-seeking actress who talks to ghosts. (Who knows where the inspiration came from . . .) Caroline Smailes, author of The Drowning of Arthur Braxton on The Accidental Medium Spooky and hilarious and brimming with oddball characters, I love this book! So when Tanz is offered a paid acting gig in her hometown, things start to look up. But Newcastle’s dead won’t stay quiet for long, and soon Tanz becomes haunted with visions of a mysterious Gin Palace guarded by a sinister figure. As Tanz starts to piece together a terrible tragedy, it becomes clear there’s no limit to what the poltergeist will do to keep his secrets his own.Reading a Tracy Whitwell book is like talking to that one slightly deranged friend on a coffee date that accidentally turns into an all-day hangout. Her writing makes me laugh out loud sometimes, and I can easily imagine myself in the setting of each chapter because of her style of writing.

After an interesting twelve years messing about in front of the camera and traveling the world though, Tracy discovered she still loved writing and completed her first full length play 'KABOOM!!!'. A son, many stageplays, screenplays and a music video followed until 2012 when she realised she was finally ready to do the thing she'd longed to do since she was six. She wrote her first novel. A crime/horror/comedy tale about an alcohol-soaked, gobby, thrill-seeking actress who talks to ghosts. (Who knows where the inspiration came from, it's almost like she based it on her own ridiculous life.) I haven’t read the first book, but I had no difficulty getting to grips with the characters and the story, a short recap is threaded into the story helps with this. Tanz(Tania only to her Nanna) is the first person narrator as well as psychic and struggling actress. Tanz is a struggling actress with a gift she would gladly not be in possession of: she can talk to ghosts! Poor Tanz has got enough on her plate juggling trying to make her acting dreams a reality with the demands of supply teaching – a profession she is wholly unsuited to! With Tanz feeling as if she is edging ever closer to a complete and utter meltdown, babbling ghosts is the very last thing she needs. But it seems as if things are finally looking up when she gets a paid acting gig in her hometown! Is Tanz on the precipice of superstardom? Or is she about to inadvertently stumble into more ghostly capers? Insufferable Characters, especially the main character, which are mostly unnecessary. 50% of the characters could have been left out.

The episode where Tanz gets to know the rest of the acting team is very funny. She struggles with her costume, her makeup and most of all the behaviour of bitchy Caroline. Because Whitwell is a trained actor, her descriptions of the less glamorous side of the profession are realistic. The fact that Tanz leads a chaotic lifestyle adds to the humour. I really enjoyed this book, Tanz is such a great character and there are a lot of laugh out loud moments, as well as some spooky ones, in this book.

Cue a job and a change of scenery with a host of new quirky characters, Tanz starts flexing some spiritual muscle and encounters a malevolent spirit that may just be her undoing. This was one of my most anticipated books of 2023 as I adored Tracy Whitwell's first book in this series. The Accidental Medium (book 1) was one of my fav reads of last year. I loved the audio book last time, so I wanted to read the audiobook for this one too. Thuli Madonsela speaks about the importance of SA's political future in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
